« on: January 31, 2010, 01:46:40 AM »
I just had an epiphany---UHOH!
Can you shoot 9x23 or super .38 in a .38/357 mag snubbie ?
Use moon clips ?
Am I way off base ?

William,

I doubt it can be done with an unmodified weapon.  Not having the casings to measure, it may be possible for the case to be inserted into the chamber where it might headspace on the case mouth, but even if this worked, you wouldn't be able to eject the spent cases except one by one from the front of the chambers.

As for the moon clips, I'm thinking the rear of the cylinder would have to be relieved slightly to allow for the cylinder to close on the moon clips.

Well William, if you want one bad enough it can be done. Smith & Wesson made a revolver chambered in 9mm using moon clips, the 940 I think. Ruger made one as well. A 9mm moon clip SP101(?). Taurus chambered the Tracker in 9mm as well. I would suspect a good smith could convert one of the above to Super or 9x23 if you really want one. It would be interesting for sure.

.38 Super will chamber in some .357's. Super brass is thicker than .357 mag brass by about .005" so it's a tight fit if they fit at all. Supers do chamber in my .357 Freedom Arms, but I haven't pulled the trigger on that. Supers will not fit my .357 Handi Rifle.
Supers do fit my T/C G2 .357 mag (custom MGM barrel) and shoot well, but low. Extraction was sticky, and sometimes I need to pry them out.
If they (.38 Super) chamber in your snubby, they will probably work, there is enough of a rim to headspace on, but I wouldn't do it. They may really stick in the chambers, and with the small rims, extraction might be tough.
I wouldn't attempt it with the tapered, rimless 9X23. I don't imagine they will even chamber with their wide base.

Hey Bill - Nope, not unless the 38/357 cylinder has been opened up to take the 38 Super.  The Super is a semi-rimmed straight case of .384 outside diameter, the 38 and 357 are rimmed straight cases of .379 diameter.

The 9mm is a rimless taped case that runs from .391 at the base of the case to .380 at the case mouth.  The 9x23 is just a longer 9mm case but is also tapered.

The revolver would have to be modified for use with moon clips.

I suppose that if you ran a 38 Super through a 357 sizing die it would probably chamber but the small semi-rim of the 38 Super may not be enough to hold it in place to prevent it from sinking further into the chamber when struck by the firing pin, so I wouldn't think it to be a good idea.......jmtcw.

The revolvers mentioned in my previous posts are all "Moonies". A chambering reamer and the proper moon clips would put you in business. I know William has no aversion to gunsmiths, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't come up with a 940 S&W in .38 Super. Properly plated and engraved, of course!

CHAMBER ADAPTERS

Chamber adapters use the rifling in your firearm to stabilize the bullet. They are excellent tools for target practice and for downing small game, eliminating unnecessary meat destruction and the recoil of full power cartridges. Our adapters are made for rifles and, where indicated by the asterisk (*), the Thompson Contender. Adapters for the Thompson Contender ONLY are indicated by "TC" (they cannot be made with offset firing pin plug).

MCACE doesn't seem to answer my email or phone calls.  I find it hard to do business with an outfit that has an ad but no feedback.  I would if I could get a few answers.

I have tried contacting MCACE for over a year now and have had no response.  I believe however that I have seen his work out there advertized by Sportsman's Guide, I think, which sells 32 acp adapters for 308s and 30-06s.  Possibly he is under contract or some such to make only those??  Who knows?
