In rifle country, 150gr Corelokt .308, in slug gun country  200gr 40cal Shockwave or Hydracon out of a 45 ML.

I've used a 308 more than any other caliber. When I lived in the southeast I used a 180gr core-lokt RN factory load most of the time. In new mexico I switched to a spitzer bullet, same weight and brand.

Here in alaska I started out with a 375H&H but soon found out there are not that many brown bears here as I thought. I went to a 45/70 in bear country and a 243 for deer. I still use core-lokts mostly.

Let's see here:

30-06 150 Grain Hornady Boattail Soft Points
30-30 110 Grain Winchester Silvertips (can't remember the powder charge)
243 95 Grain A-MAX
223 55 Grain Nosler Ballistic Silvertip over 24.4 grains of IMR 3031
22 Hornet 45 Grain Winchester Soft Points

And the all time classic:
22 shorts right between the eyes!!!!!!!!  :P :P :P :P :P
Just kidding about the whole 22 short thing. That isn't legal. The smallest thing I ever shot a deer with was a 218 Bee.

These are my favorite proven many times over deer killers.
Rifles
25-06 with 117 Sierra Pro Hunter.
264 Win mag 130 Nosler Accubond.
308 and 30X47 HBR 125 Nosler Ballistic Tip
6.5X55 Swede 120 Nosler Ballistic Tip
270 Win 130 Sierra Game King
Contender Pistol
6mm-225 Win 80 Sierra SSP
357 Mag 180 Hornady XTP
Have not used it yet but will give it a try next season 125 Nosler Ballistic Tip in my 30-30AI. It will only be starting out about 250 fps slower than my 30X47 HBR rifle so it should work very good out to the 150 yard shots I will have when hunting with the pistol.

Over the years I have shot deer with the 22-250, 243, 257, 25-06, 264 , 270, and 308 Norma. All got the job done but My old Win Mdl 70 270 that I got in 1952 using 130 Gr bullet reloads is my favorite. That old 270 Win has shot pronghorn, mule deer, elk, and other unwanted critters . I ll be 75 years old before the 2010 fall deer season and the old 270 is what I ll be using.

Favorite deer caliber & bullet? The one I kill deer with - 30-30, out of a Marlin 336. Bullet? Well... Federal PowerShoks are cheapest, and work fine; 150 is slightly easier on the shoulder than the 170, so I go with it. Others work fine, too.

Sufficiency is a good thing.
