what is your favorite caliber and bullet

Modern Rifle  .270 with a 130 grain Sierra Bowtail. I can't even remember how many deer and elk have fallen to that calibre & bullet combo. I will admit that shot placement is always a concern, but especially with elk.

Black Powder  .50 or .54 calibre, Round Ball sitting on top of 95 grains of Black Powder. Average yardage with black powder is 10 to 45 yards, but I did take a nice 5X6 Bull Elk at ~125 a few years back.

My .300 win mag, 180 gr sierra BT, 77gr RL 22 has worked well for a good many years.

I am so used to using this gun that I feel naked in the deer woods with out it. I used my wifes lever .35 rem. last year for a doe only hunt, and I just had a hard time feeling confident with it even though I knew it was right on.

I dont know how guys can switch up guns like they do, to me it would be like cheating on the wife and having the weird feeling of being with another woman.

A lot has to do with the area I will be hunting. Thickets, it’s the 336 with 170 gr bullet.
 If open country, it’s a 308 with 150 gr, or the 270 with 150gr,
The 3006 don’t get too much time in the woods anymore, but when it was my primary rifle it was loaded with 180gr, I load all my hunting ammo, and its all Hornady, I use the cheaper stuff, why use the cheap stuff on paper, and then go to the high price stuff to hunt with, the deer really don’t care if you paid $20.00 for a 100 or $40.00 for 50 bullets.

Well it would have to be my 1st hunting rifle, Carl Gustav model 38 Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55mm shooting 139gr soft points, many a deer fell to those bullets. Sadly I traded her off. These days I'm shoosting a .270 Win with 130gr Hornadys.

Hmmmmmm....and how exactly would you know about that "weird feeling"?   :o   :o  Just kidding. Just kidding.

Winchester 270 caliber x 150 grain Nosler Partition out of a Model 70 Classic Featherweight.  Nice combination and I shoot that rifle well.

I really enjoy reading about all of the rifles and combinations used.

I second that. Also have used 30/06 with 165 CoreLokt, and .243 with 100 grain CoreLokt. Also we have had good results with 7mm-08 and 140CL's and .308 with 180grain Win grey box. A good moderate kicking cartridge that you can shoot well and put the bullet where it needs to be is what you want.

308 Caliber, shooting 180 grain Federal Fusions.

It is purely my oppinion here, but the .308 Win case has too small of a case capacity to get the full potential of the 180gr bullet, in the 30-06 however, this bullet wt. shines.
In my .308 Win 88 she loves 165gr bullets.
Of course if these bullets wt's work for you by all means.......

My favorite deer rifle?  The one I'm carrying at the time.

It's hard to decide, but I generally let the terrain dictate the rifle.  For thick woods hunting, where you can't see over 50 yards, I like my .45-70 Handi.  You're only going to get one shot, and it'll be quick.

For open woods, I like my lever action, in .30-30.

For places with pipelines, or open country (which we have darned little of, around here), I prefer a bolt action, in .30-06Or maybe .243.

I'm wed to one woman, but I'm not wed to any of those rifles.  I pick the one I feel like picking.
