I would recommend a deer use something like a 223. Deer are fast and can run away from most threats,so their most likely to have to stay and fight if its man they are up against, becuase hes going to "reach out" with some sort of high powered rifle or with a bow. 223 is light and accurate and made for humans,so it should work very well. They also often hunt in packs,so if you wound or kill one,the others will usually stay behind to help rather than giving chase. Any of the typical 55-60gr bullets should work just fine. Its most important though for deer to get a lot of practice during the off season and keep their wits about them when in season. You cant miss fast enough to stay out of Bubbas freezer.

Well these days its the .38 Special Buffalo Bore Soft Lead SWC HP Standard Pressure(20C) load. Good for home invaders and close range deer. POA at 25 with either animal. Perfect load for either occassion.  With loads like these the .38 entered my .357 level of performance on medium sized Whitetails. Some say self defense loads aren't meant for hunting. They must have never interviewed the animals (:  My personal thought is..... If you have never used it then how can you know how it works? I reviewed my old Texas hunters education manual some time ago. It stated that most modern handgun cartridges are fine for whitetail. From declining in power from a .30-06 to a .38 Spl over 20 years it has occurred over the years that they were right. No deer has made it over 50 yds regardless of caliber in this spectrum. Anyway...... my opinion. The important part is that we are hunters and protect our heritage despite the tools.

This season it was 7mm-08 and 139 grain Interbonds.
Last year was 6.5x55 and 160 grain Interlocks.
The year before was 30-06 and 180 grain Silvertips.
I like whatever I'm shooting-They all work just fine.

All time favorite is the .358 Hornady 200gr SP in the 35 Whelen. Plan to use this bullet in the 358 next fall. The. 338 Hornady 200gr FP in the 338-06 is great as well.

I've used several and never had complaint.  I guess I tend to favor the short actions as, to me, they are a bit handier....So I'll go with the 7m-08 with 120 BT's or 140 Accubonds.

daman i have a hornet also and im triying to get a deer with it

I have shot 7-8 also with 45gr.sp all with rib shots all dropped where they stood or went maybe as much as 20yds,very surprising little cartridge, and I'll never take head shots due to the fact that if your off just a bit all you have is a maimed deer still running, and with lung shots you"ll have them. The 45s due seem to create alot of bloodshot though so dont hit to close to the shoulders.

The woods are thick where I come from. 35 Remington has worked very well for me. 200 grain Hornady LE's.
One shot, one dead deer.

Next year I'm going to try my new .308 with something in 150 grain factory, maybe core-lokt's, maybe fusions, maybe something else.

Good post, I've enjoyed reading it. Lot's of variety for sure.
