357 LeverEvolution for Deer Hunting
« on: February 01, 2010, 08:02:32 AM »
Guys

I have a 4 inch 357. It is just a Rossi (I know all of the Ruger nuts here are crying). I have a colt and a smith, but I bought the Rossi so I could tote it Turkey hunting as a hog/yote getter without worrying about rust. I can shoot 3" groups at 25 yards with this gun and open sights. At bow hunting ranges, will the Hornady ammo perform on 100 lb does?

If you put one in their lungs their dead. I would stay away from any shoulder bone. Don't expect them to drop dead on the spot. They most of the time run off around 50 yards or so like a arrowed deer will do. I have never used these bullets myself. But any 357 mag pushing a 125 to 180 gr expanding or SWC bullet 1000 fps or more tight behind the front shoulder through the lungs 50 yards or less will kill any 100 lb deer. I really like the Hornady XTP or Speer Gold Dot bullets 158 to 180 gr pushed to the max for deer. By the way there is nothing wrong with a Rossi pistol. I have two and they shoot and hold up just as well as any other make that I have.

Thanks Shot1.

You are right about the Rossi, but so many folks knock em before they try them. I have the 4 inch 6 shot blued with the overmolded grips. The reason I ask about the load and deer is that I do a lot of woods walking and don't lug a rifle around. I tote a 20 gauge with #6's for my small game needs. I bought the Rossi for a last resort hog shooter when turkey hunting and have found that the price tag accompanied with the accuracy has made it my favorite woods pistol. I generally shoot 158 grain semi jacketed hollow points (38 spl) for feral dogs and coyotes. I know it is game capable with the 38's cause I killed two yotes with it this past year. I in no way am going to use this as a primary deer or hog weapon, but if I get a good shot on a deer when I am setting cameras or stands during season I wanted a little confirmation of performance. Hogs will only be shot with this pistol if I get treed by one or a 15 or so yard shot is to good to pass up.
