Anyone ask the dog how far he was leading him?

Though the gun's safety was set, the lab somehow stepped on it, causing the safety to disengage and the weapon to fire, hitting the dog's owner in the upper back.

Sounds more like a fish story than a hunting story to me.   :-\

If his story is true (and I find it pretty unlikely that it happened as he stated) he had better watch out for falling pianos and the like because he is one heck of an unlucky son of a gun.

p.s.: The gun should have been unloaded and action open if he was going down range.  Takes all of 5 seconds to empty even an auto-loader and make it safe.  No sympathy from me.  Give the dog a bone.

I agree, unsafe gun handling!  Following simple range safety rules would have prevented this accident.

This could be bad news for Labs. It seems like every time we have one of these cases it's a labrador retriever doing the shooting. This could put them in the class of dangerous dogs along with pit bulls and rottweillers.

See. People are already making jokes. I remember when all we had to worry about was soiled carpeting and the occasional minor attack on a mail man.

Just about anyone whom as ever hunted with dogs a lot has done it. This was freak deal. Coulda killed him, but like I said. Everyone whom has ever hunted with a dog very much, has laid a gun down or something similar and gotten away with it.

We had a similar case here in Minnesota some years back where a dog stepped on a gun that was laid down and shot his owner. Nonfatal also.

Billy-
That was last year I think. Must have been a Remington, can see how a dog can get the safety off and pull the trigger with one step if the gun is laying on it's left side. That one is right up there with climbing up a tree with a loaded gun, are you really going to shoot a deer while you are hanging on a ladder or tree steps?

That fellow needs to bring his Labrador to retrieve the ducks, but he also needs to bring a German Shepherd to keep an eye on the Labrador, in case the Lab goes for the gun. :D

He never would have had this problem if he hunted with a French Poodle, they are afraid of guns.  ;D

Brett, don’t knock them “French poodles,”

While stationed at England AFB, La. many years ago I had a neighbor who had a full size poodle that was one of the best retrievers I have ever seen.  He would also point quail. back and hold as well as any bird dog.  We often hunted together, my German Shorthair and his poodle, we almost always got out limit.

The Shorthair was a young dog, but picked up a lot of good hunting skills from the Poodle, he later made a very good dog.

I agree with you RockBilly that poodles are great little retrievers. If I'm not mistaken, many of the water spaniel type retrievers have poodle ancestry in their genes. The wife has had a number of poodles, and everyone of them would play fetch with me all day long, or at least until I couldn't stand playing any longer. Then they'd follow me around for the rest of the day with a ball or stick in their mouth, just waiting for me to throw it for them.

Sorry, my poor attempt at humor.  Actually I am quite aware that Standard (full size) poodles were originally bread as and do make excellent hunting dogs.  They are also one of the most intelligent breads of dogs and are quick learners.

Brett I thought it was funny. ;D My wife had a miniture poodle up until about 6 months ag0. We had that dog 13 years. It was tough puttin him down, but he was a born again coward when came to the outdoors. We have a Rat Terrier now, that's only gonna go about 10 or 12 pounds grown, but at about 4 months old now, he's already trying to run company off when they come to the door, only he ain't kiddin. We have to put the little turd up when company comes.
We figure if anyone gets past the alarm system, then they'll have to try to keep him from eatin their legs out from under him, cause I don't think they'll catch him.
