Hunt squirrels with my Savage 24D, 22 mag under a 20 ga.  I like the 22 mag but am disappointed with the regulation of the two barrels at anywhere from 25 feet to 25 yards.

Have a Baikal 30-06 over a 12 ga thats right on at 45 and 50 yards.  The 30-06 cloverleafs with 110 grain reloads at a 100 yards.  Its for hunting predators, but have not been able to get out and hunt them yet due to health problems.  Maybe soon, wish me luck.

OB One, I sure enjoyed hunting preditors when I lived in new mexico and squirells as well. Sounds like you have the right guns for those pursuits. I will pray your health improves so you can get out with those shooting irons.  :D

I have a "Staggs Built" 20 gauge over 30-30 that I use to hunt deer and hogs with.  I like it because of the 2 triggers instead of a selector and no hammer to cock.

I think Cape Guns are interesting. Never owned one, just like them.

Cheese,

would you prefer the over under or side by side cape gun? I really like the SXS.

Yes techincally you are correct. The O/U is a combo and the SxS a cape but since others were discussing O/U models I was unsure if you knew the difference.  ;D

Regards,

I had been looking for a drilling but could never find what I was looking for.  The combos I have should cover any hunting situation I encounter in North America.

Regards,

Those Valmet 412's are very addicting!  At one time i had more than 30 bbls for mine.  A couple years ago i had a sell off, and now i'm down to about 20 ?.

I think they are the best "affordable" combo gun out there, with all kinds of choises to make just about anyone happy.

My  state precludes centerfire rifles so I use my Savage & Stevens 22lr/.410's

I have an old German drilling made between 1898 & 1904, or so I am told because of the proof marks. I have had it to three different shops, but nobody could find any evidence of who made it, as there are no makers marks on it. The common opinion was that it was the graduate project of an apprentice, but I don't know for sure.

It is a 16 ga with a 9.3x72R. It has exposed hammers & opens via an underlever. The action is 100% engraved & it has very fancy wood. There is a cartridge trap in the stock & the screws that hold the butt plate on are even engraved.

Anyhow, I use it for a squirrel gun & at turkey shoots, as the chokes are extremely tight. It will reach out further than my full choke Rem 870. Many guys have choked when they see something this fancy in the woods, but I bought it as a gun, not a painting to hang on the wall.

Savage 24 - 22LR over 20 Ga - put on receiver sight in rear and filed the front to partridge - I have a scope for the grooves with see under capability but seldom use it on the gun.

I took my 24V-A .222/20 out last Saturday and shot 4 woodchucks from 50 to 155 yd.  I've taken my .22 mag./20 and .30-30/20 out coyote hunting, but haven't got one yet.

I bought a Savage 24 Series M with sling attachment about 3 years ago for hunting grouse.  It is a 22lr and 20 ga.  I had some problems with the trigger, so purchase a new trigger, hammer, mainspring plunger, plunger assembly and pivot.  Seems to work very well now.  There is a website specifically for Savage 24.com.  They have a forum as well and some very interesting material on bending the mainspring plunger so that it applies good pressure on the firing pin for the 20ga.  I had a lot of misfires on the 20ga prior to doing the work on it.  The 22lr has always fired well.  When I first sighted the 22 in, I found that it shot about 2 in to the right and 3 low at 25 yards.  Adjusting the rear sight resolved the height issue, but I had to tap the front site to fix the horizontal issue.  The 20 ga. shots almost dead on with slugs if I leave the rear site up and aim for the top of the barrel rather than the top of the front site at about 25 yards.  Using 7 1/2 bird shot gives me a good pattern shooting like that as well.  I have shot quite a few grouse with that gun and it quite comfortable to either carry or pack around on the quad.  I am curious about mounting a scope on it but it seems to me that the challenges outweigh the benefits if you are using the 22 and the 20ga regularly.

I have a Savage 24 in .22 mag over 20 gauge and I made up a second set of barrels in .22 LR over 30/30. Getting the two rifle barrels to zero with one scope was a challenge which I complicated by frequently changing my mind as to what load I wanted to shot out of the 30/30 but I have it pretty much worked out now. ;D

coyotejoe,
I am very interested in the process that you created the extra barrels. Could you tell more?

Maybe the photos will explain it better than 1,000 words. The barrels came from Numrich Gun Parts maybe 15 years ago and probably are no longer available. The 30/30 barrel was originally made for a levergun Mossberg offered for a short time maybe 20 years back. The .22 was intended to be the upper barrel of a savage 24 but was a reject because the bore was off center at one end. I used a stub of an H&R 12 gauge barrel and turned the 30/30 to slip into the 12 gauge chamber, the shoulder of the 30/30 barrel abutting the forcing cone of the 12 gauge. The H&R underlug is longer than a Savage so it was shortened from the front end until it would seat and lock up in the Savage. The .22 was soldered into a groove filed it the top of the H&R barrel. The 30/30 was pre chambered but I had to rent a reamer to chamber the .22. I used a front barrel band for an M-24 .22/.410 and it just happened to fit both barrels perfectly. It took some trial and error tinkering (lots) to finally get the .22 zeroed at 75 yards when the 30/30 is 2" high at 100 but there it now stands, finally! One of the most frustrating parts was getting the .22 extractor to work, I tried several designs before finally getting one to work without binding. I did this while living in a 2 room cabin, my only tools being hacksaw, files, a bench grinder and a propane torch.
Of course it would have been much easier if I had started with a Savage barrel stub but I had the H&R and I wanted to preserve the original .22 mag/20 gauge so I now have two sets of barrels for it.

CJ-
My hat is off to you! I think this is beyond my abilities. I love my camper 24 but have had no luck finding a centerfire brother for it. Maybe someday I will get brave enough to try your route.
