Accubond, Interlock or Scirracco for 308 Encore.............
« on: November 04, 2003, 04:05:22 PM »
I am looking at getting some heavier hitting loads together for my Encore in 308.
Info I have gotten together leads me to either the Hornady Interlock, Swift Scirracco, or the the Nosler Accubond.
I am looking in the 165 gr. area.
Has anyone done any work with these, and have an opionion regarding there potency on Elk size game?

Actually, I am aware that all three would be effective on Elk size game, I am more interested in whether anyone has used or loaded these bullets, and how they compare ballistically.
I also saw that the Nosler Accubond is available in a 200 gr for the 308.
Maybe a bit of overkill for Elk, but good Hog medicine?

Kevin;
I brought up a similar question about the 708 on elk and received a bunch of flack about using a small cartrige on a large animal like a elk. I called Nosler about the Accubonds and they said they may be a bit tough but in the same breath he told me they are designed to expand down to 1700 fps. So I did a bit of testing on my own and found that I could drive a 150 grain par @ around 2500 fps and a 160 @ 2450 with the 160 grain penetrating around 4" deeper but with a smaller wound channel. Not by much but smaller. If you go by the ballistics shots should be kept 100 yards and under to keep up to the 1500 ft lb of energy that many use as a minimum on elk. So to conclude all this rambling I would say use the heaviest bullet you can drive the fastest the most accurately!  I havent gotten any speeds from anyone here on the 308 out of a Encore but personaly I would stick to 165-168 in your Encore and use either a Partition, or one of the others you mentioned in that weight and get close.

I hope they come out with more weights in the accubond but I think they are targeting the Magnum crowd with the tougher bullets.
