10 Ga Turkey-Quesions
« on: February 02, 2010, 02:45:01 PM »
Hello all.  This is my first post, but I have read many of the posts already including the FAQs.  I am getting ready for turkey season and recently purchased the 10 ga turkey.  I know that a 20 will work, but I wanted an SB2 frame...so additional barrels can be added later.  As I understand from reading the SB2s will accept rifle barrels??  I have already purchased an ATI stock, so that LOP can be changed depending on my setup.  I have also recieved my Limbsaver recoil pad that fits the ATI (it was leftover from what Quantico did not buy up at the SHOT Show).  My problem lies in putting adjustable sights on this turkey tool.  The barrel is d&t'ed 1/2 way down, and it will accept weaver #19s.  Is there a fiber optic sight company that makes an adjustable sight to either 1) screw directly into the current holes, or 2) mounts to a weaver base (two piece)?  Any help would be much appreciated.  As far as patterning, I plan on trying the factory turkey choke with Hevi-13s.  Anybody still using their factory choke?  Thanks and I realy appreciate this site and the wealth of knowledge that you have provided for a newbie like me!
Take care.

Welcome! Unfortunately the SB2 10ga frame isn't the same as an SB2 rifle frame, the only barrels they'll fit to it are other 10ga shotgun and the 12ga Ultra Slug Hunter barrel. I'll leave the shotgun questions to those that have em.  ;)

Thanks Tim.  I am already learning, there are 2 types of SB2 frames... Oh well.  I am turning more and more to single shots.  I have an older contender that has a barrel stub that now handles the 6.8 SPC, an encore in 6mmAI, a 12 Ultra Slug Hunter....  It only takes 1 shot, unless you are in MD, like me last year.  The law requires 2 does after a buck.  Needless to say the single took three in a row...  I only take three deer a year for my family, so I stopped.
Thanks,
Josh

I have heard some not such good things about the colapsable stocks under heavy recoil. you might want to do some research on that.

I talked to ATI prior to the purchase.  They had their tech guy call me back.  He assured me that it would handle the recoil.  He stated that they make the collapsable stocks for Mossberg's Factory Tactical Turkey Models.  Hope I don't have to eat ATI's and my words though.

Now you guys got me worried about the stock.  I'll lock it down in the lead sled to start.  Any how, I have a CVA Accura that I put a scope on and I thought I'd see what its adjustable rear sight would even look like on the 10.  Low and behold the CVA fiber optic sight has the proper TPI, screwed right on, holds tight, and the fitment to the barrel contour is perfect.  I called HR today, and they could not tell me if any sights were availble for this model (10 ga turkey d&ted 1/2 way down).  I'm calling Brownells tomorrow.  I believe I can get away with only replacing the front bead with a fiber optic front bead and guess what, I'll have what I was looking for.

Threads per inch update:  I called HR once again today.  I asked what the tpi is for the front bead, after they checked my serial number against a database?? the gentleman said 6-48.  I explained to him that that is the tpi for the base screws not the front bead (wich is a smaller screw pattern).  He said that everything on an HR is 6-48, I asked him to look once more.....He said the bead tpi is 3-56... anyhow I ordered a 3-56 with a washer to make up the difference between CVAs front sight (6-48) and HRs bead (3-56).  This is a gradual ramp for the front sight, and fits better (with less overhang above the choke) if I reverse the mount.  It is a fiber optic front sight as well, so perception dosen't seem to matter.  All I see is a red fiber dot inside of the two green fiber optic dots (from the rear adjustable CVA sight mounted in the factory holes 6-48 that normally would accept the #19 weaver bases for a scope).  Hopefully someone will be able to use this info since HR has not a clue.....
Thanks,
Josh

That guy with the Mossberg is very lucky he didn't lose an eye. I think I'd be sugesting that Mossberg pick up part of that E.R. bill too. Before the lawyer gets involved.

The best turkey set up that I've seen was on a Nova a guy had. He had one of those glow looking tubes that picks up light and during some rough handling by some airline guys he lost the plastic glo part. He was on the road when it happened so he was stuch with a front sight that was just a little halo on the end of his barrel. He said after he hunted with it for a while he wouldn't go back to the glo part for anything. In fact he has a bunch of his friends doing the same thing.
