Toyota
« on: February 03, 2010, 12:51:20 PM »
What do you all think will become of Toyota?
I bought my first Toyota in 07 a Brand new Tacoma ..  Up to then I've never owned anything but Dodge Crysler Products..
I have never liked a truck better than My little rice burning Toyota.  I have just Over 70,000 On it . I have done Nothing but change oil and filters and Tires On it.
If dodge was Like this I would have stayed with Dodge..  after 2 Full size and 3 Dakotas I'll never own an other..   I will say My 96 3/4 Ton Ram was My Fav.  Would go any where and Pull just about everything I ever wanted .

This was discussed on anther thread earlier. I think Toy will emerge just fine. They do make an excellant product so its loyal owners will likly not run for the hills. Its happened before to other car companies. I think most To owners trust Toy and their ability to solve this issue. I will say however, that 1st generation Tundra was a joke of a full size truck in every respect. The remake is real truck.

The press is very obnoxious toward Toyota because Toyota is the paragon of quality, reliability and durability in the car world. They just want to see it bleed.

Now the bozos in government are showing the government's vested interests by advising the public to stop driving their Toyotas. Sure the statement was retracted, but it should never have been made in the first place.

Unlike GM and Chrysler (two companies with a long long history of major recalls), Toyota learns from its mistakes. That's reason enough to own a Toyota.

Not being smart but it may be built in the US by US workers, (which is great) but the bulk of the money is still going over seas.
Just the same as so many other products being made here in the good old USA.

True about the press & true about the Gov's vested interest & in addition to the Gov owning GM, keep in mind that Obama is in bed with the Unions & these clowns don't like non-union US car plants. Toyota can get tired of the politics & move the plants to Mexico, then the same Toyota buyers will still buy Toyotas, but the US would loss thousands of jobs, wow wouldn't that be nice?  ::)

So yes, these problems did occur, but the press is playing it for all it's worth for the above stated reasons.

I don't think that's correct Tom. Think on it are you really proposing that 50% PLUS of the price paid on a vehicle is profit? Clear go back to the owners profit? Nope sorry I can't buy into that. Most of the cost of a vehicle is the labor and parts that go into the making of it.

Even of that money that goes to management most of them live here in the US whether they are US citizens or foreign nationals so still the majority of their salaries stay here in the US. Only the clear profit after all expenses and all taxes are paid go to the stock holders of these companies. Now it might be that foreign name brand companies like Toyota are owned entirely by foreign nationals that I do not know.

But to say MOST of the money goes overseas is just plain wrong. There are at least as many if not more American made products going into them than into so called American brand vehicles.

Honda has a HUGE plant just a few miles down the road from me here in Bama. There are enormous factories all around the area making parts that go into those Honda cars made there. Their employees are some of the highest paid in this area. Just the far side of B'ham from me is a Mercedes plant and like the Honda plant it has a huge local support market of businesses making the parts to go into those vechicles made there. Further south Hyundai has a plant and the same applies there.

All of them are employing Americans and paying them darn good salaries and in turn they are boosting the local economies of the areas where they are located. If the big three had gotten their butts out of Detroit and improved their quality and spread the wealth around the country they might not be in the mess they are today.

Sorry but to me these "foreign" companies today are more American than are the big three in reality.

I too am a Tacoma owner and believe me I tried very, very hard to buy something else.  Toyota was not that easy to deal with and they had a few things that irritated me to no end, but in spite of all that, the Tacoma is in an entire different league than all of its competition.

Actually I think this whole ordeal will probably be very good for Toyota.  They had gotten a bit too arrogant and needed to be reminded that their customers are more important than all their successs.  Hopefully they will redouble their efforts to make the best vehicles they can.

I too have to disagree with Longtom. There is a Toyota Plant about 60 miles North of me (across state lines), a Toyota plant about 100 miles East (KY). Also have Nissan, Mazda, etc. within 100 miles. These plants are providing good paying jobs for thousands of workers. Even here, miles away from the plants there are satellite companies making parts for these plants. They are a big part of the economy around here. I'm pretty sure there are many Americans holding Toyota stock as well. Thanks to a "slip" of the tongue by LaHood (i think he is Obama's sec. of transportation or something) that stock dropped like a ton of bricks yesterday. Was it a mistake or a warning from the administration, Government Motors, and the unions? I dunno, but it sure was convenient.
Right now there are thousands of Toyota workers not producing vehicles until this is resolved. Toyota is paying them to attend "training" classes. That shows me a class act. I don't expect to ever buy a new vehicle again. But if I do Toyota will get a good look from me.

I don't know what the % of profit is now but back in the late 80s through the late 90s I know that both Ford & GM was a tad over $8000.00 per truck average.
The reason I know this is because I was involved in a fleet owners deal with GM where I would buy ten trucks at a time direct from GM and pay for them up front and that was the amount I was saving over the best deal I could get from any GM dealer in the tri-state area.
A friend of mine in PA was doing the same thing with Ford and he said about the same amount on them also.
A little less.

Toyota being foreign owned and with a lot of the parts coming from over seas along with the amount of profit (how ever much % that is) I still would think a large % of the $ are still going over seas.
May not be 50% but still a large part.
Nothing really against Toyota for that.

Same with the other MFGs.
A large part of them goes over seas also for parts.
It's a shame that we can't build a product that equals a foreign companies for a competitive price.
Blame the unions along with upper management.
I think we can.
I also think that our companies don't want to.
They have gotten to used to the big pay and the good life.

GB's analysis proves that the real issue with the American car companies is a lack of engineering design quality. The cars and their parts can be built here state side to a high degree in qty and quality at a competitive price if the design is of high quality. There's nothing wrong with the American worker allthough I do beleive the Union aspect is an additional burden the American manufactures have that the foriegn plants don't.
