Read on Marlin Talk that the humane siciety is putting it on the ballot to outlaw bear hunting over bait or with dogs in the state of Maine.  Kathy or anyone have you heard anything about this?

Oh yeah.  They supposedly got enough signatures to put it on the ballot for next year.  They want to outlaw all bear hunting except for fair chase.  If anyone has ever walked the woods of Maine you will know that it is ver difficult to find a bear.  This is just another attempt to end all hunting.  In NJ I believe they stopped bear hunting about 30 years ago because the numbers were down to about 500.  The bear population has increased in that 30 years to about 6,000 in three counties.  What do these people think will happen in Maine where we have 30,000 bear.  But we all know they are totally off the wall and do not use common sense.  What we have to do is fight this with facts and figures and keep the emotion out of the debates.

good luck to ya.  I hope there are plenty of folks who will take up the fight and kick the HS butt out of Maine.   It's too bad that so many people feel that the HS is a reputable organization.  They may have been at one time, but I see them as just slightly less radical eco terrorists than greenpeace or peta.

Actually they've NEVER been reputable. This is a totally different group than what most folks think of when you say the Humane Society. The group in question here is HSUS or the Humane Society of the US. IT is not to be confused with the folks who run dog pounds. Not the same at all.

These folks just take money from whoever will give it and use it to try to end hunting and other uses of animals. They do nothing I'm aware of to help animals.

Right on Graybeard !! They are just a money making ,scheming ,anti hunting ,organization. They did get the required signatures to be on the 2004 ballot. They havent been verified yet but its a sure thing they have them. Oh yeah, its not the HSUS behind this. Its the Maine Citizens For Fair Bear Hunting Coalition. The what ??? Its just another front for the HSUS so it looks like its a local thing, not the big national org that is really behind it(HSUS). It doesnt  look good for bear hunting in Maine.

So very true Graybeard.  The Humane Society that Kathy and the others are talking about is the same organization that tried the same thing here in California earlier this year.  It is an off shoot of P.E.T.A. and has their financial backing.  Took many and much phone calling, mailing, e-mailing and sending notices to our Representatives in our state congress to get it shot down.  Time for a grass roots movement in Maine to do the same thing.  At least here they only tried to get it passed thru congress.  I'm very glad they didn't go the route they have in Maine.  Too many times the voting public will vote a bill in that they think is doing some good and it ends up doing more harm instead.  Our law against Mountain Lion hunting in California is a prime example of a lie that got passed into law that we now can't seem to get repelled.  Although I don't like hunting bears over bait and I'm way too old to go chasing a bunch of hounds around the hills anymore.  I'm all in favor of leaving the hunting of bears to the way a person wants to.  You got my support in any way that I can, just let me know.  Lawdog

It's just an evil thing that might happen to Maine...Im going to have 9 dogs that won't be able to run in Maine anymore if this goes through, and it won't be a good thing...My coyote hounds and coons hounds will get a lot more action, though...

Well, Hound Hunter, just after these folks take care of protecting the bears, they'll go after the coons and coyotes. Then comes the outlawing of humans possessing dogs!. Ever hear of Incrementalism? 8)

Maine_Hound_Hunter,

First let me Welcome you to Graybeard Outdoors.  The best forum on the net for hunters/shooters to tell it the way they see it.  When this group tried to ban bear hunting with dogs here in California at the same time they wanted to ban hound hunting of coyotes, raccoons, basically ban hunting with dogs, P E R I O D.  If they get their way they will leave you with an expensive hound pack that you can feed and pet and feed and pet and...what else can you do with your hound when they ban their use for hunting.  Better start making those phone calls, writing those letters, sending out emails and drumming up support for your side and fight them now because once a law gets passed it's damn hard to get it repelled.  Lawdog

Lawdog,

All it will take if that passes is one good bear attack and the thing will just collapse......Though I wouldn't mind a big bear attack happening up here before that....lol

Though I would feel bad for the victim...
