Would you like your balloon popped?
« on: February 03, 2010, 03:29:31 PM »
Anybody have close-up pics of the 1870 Krupp 3.7cm BALLONABWEHRKANONE ?
Might be fun to make a scale model, fuse lit, blackpowder of course.
 Thanks in advance.

We'd have to pick a good spot to use it - lots of down - range space.  But a baloon shoot would be fun.

Smooth bore?   Hmmm.  A 3.7cm pre1898 shotgun!   :D

It isn't much, but I found this:

The Balloon Bridge from Paris during the siege by the Prussians- 1870-71

Thank you subdjoe, that's close to the same picture in my book. I guess we can use some imagination to build one.

Don't even need to waste the helium; use a tin of Sterno to heat the air for a hot air balloon.

Although you should probably keep it on a leash so you don't start a forest fire somewhere.

You could use a hair drier to expedite the process; if you have electricity available.

How about Sky Lanterns?

Never shot at them with a cannon but it sure is fun to try to hit them with bottle rockets and roman candles.

Sky lanterns are a bit pricey.
When I was younger (about a half century ago) I used to make hot air balloons similar to the sky lanterns from the plastic bags that dry cleaners put over the cleaned clothes. I used Sterno fuel for the heat source.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

If somebody actually shoots something down they will be making history, since the Prussians never succeeded in shooting down any balloons.

Murdoch also had a chair attached to the trash bags. Oh, how to solve this problem? Draw straws?

Those "sky lanterns" are scary things.  I don't care how much they call them "fire proof."  "Incindiary device" seems more like it.

maybe they could be tethered somehow ? how long do they burn ? ....these cannon targets ;D

I ordered one to see it's unworthiness ... ::)

My brother and I made some as kids ,just a large dry cleaner bag with MacDonalds straws stuck together in an X straght pins to fasten to the bags bottom . Several pins up thru the straws would then get a bithday candle on each pin .

The sucsses rate was 2-3 to 1 ...not good , BUT when they worked at night with no wind .......a big (to us) lite up X surrounded by a glowing halo .... ;D

We amazed ourselfs ! most melted to death trying to launch ....

We bought one of those big red and white paper balloons from the back of a comic book .....johnsonjohnson? anyway it was a kit ,we glued it al up ,mom was not at all happy about this on her kitchen floor ...

Somehow it caught fire upon launch ....a slight breeze IIRC Whoooffff the flames went 15 feet in the air , some started at 7 or so because the balloon was inflated to that height .

How about an RC 1890 dreamy ballon ship with sails rigging it could have a bank of nano cannons ......electric  geared motor turnning a piar of huge dia. propellers belt drivin of course ? :o

And big ol honkin fabic covered rudder in the back with the fishtail scalops ...

I had a book of flight as a kid and it had a 'Ship of the Desert" flying accross the desert low on a moonlit night .

So that raises the question, What pre-1898 cannons were used in airships of any type?

I heard somewhere that all these stories take place long ago in galaxies far, far away...

Guess that covers the pre-1898 issue.

 :) :D ;D

Seriously, from what I understand balloons were originally used mainly as observation posts. Not sure if any were armed, weight would be a definite factor.
