DD,

This thread has so many twists and turns I feel like I'm driving in the back woods of W.Virginia........

Besides der Balloonen Poppen the idea of a stake shoot might be something to add to the event,

say a 1"x2".....

O.K., let's try and drift a bit and get some rules set in stone, for the balloon popping event. Balloons 5 feet above the ground and guns 100 yards back? Balloons too high? Balloons too low? Guns too close? Different sized balloons, different kinds of guns, etc.......Work it out, and make the rules happen.

Can we bring our own balloons?  ::) ............

I have a friend with a surplus store.........

I guess weather balloons would give an unfair advantage......

:P So, what is the problem? Set some specific ideas out for people to comment on, such as size of balloons your shooting at from 100 yards? A regular party size balloon, at 100 yds, would look like a match head, IMHO. And, a 1"x2" stick, from any distance, would look like a splinter...so, I like the idea of a 4"x4" at 10 yards. Or a 6"x6" at 50 yds, and 8"x8" at 75, and a 10"x10" at 100yards. Something all us older guys with older eyes can see! LOL! And a weather balloon at 100 yards would be a big enough target, say a 5 foot one? With bulls eyes painted on it to range in on. We need all the guys here on this forum, because by pooling ideas, we get better results. I'll confess, I wandered off to other forums for a while, cause everything seemed to stagnate on just a couple of topics. Diversity is great to stimulate the old gray cells! Like Double D said, "Go for it"! BTW, the Postal Shoot is a great idea, looking forward to that one! BoomLover

Lance,

Sorry if I fuffed your feathers I didn't mean to.

I think the distance the ballons are set may need to depend on the caliber of the cannon

I am wondering if anyone would be able to hit a balloon at 100 yards the 37 MM cannon was

firing at a very large observation balloon if you scale the balloon down I think you also need to scale

the yards down say a party balloon at 15 to 20 yards remember the party balloon is going to be a lot

lighter than the observation balloon which had the weight of the basket sandbags etc, so the party

balloon is going to skip and move about some in a light breeze.  at a hundred yards that weather 6ft balloon

I was jokeing about might actually be to scale.....

Those are some good ideas, if a few more folks jump in with what size balloons they want to shoot at, we'll get some rules made.

You know you can get neopream rubber weather balloons ? They are cheap ,get a "party pack of hellium" from the local party supply store .........no I'm not talking the local bar !

Just teather them good so they can't just blow off ..... I'd forget trying to balance them to hover ,my dad made baskets for helium ballons for as long ago as I can remember . Usualy the balast would be a penny ....BUT trying to get it "neutral" outdoors....good luck .

I think just some of those mylar balloons in the grocery story would be great . just out there at 40 yards or so ....more if it's calm .

Can you actually shoot at an elevated angle at this range ? because "IFF'FEN HIITT'EN OR ZEE MIZZ'IN HARE BALON ER SHOTTEN GO LONGGIN DER FARWAY soonagey .

Gary

BTW Dan , "the paper is has been removed"  Nice and easy thats the ticket ;)

Well, what i want to do and what Tim(CW) will let me do at the range, is still up in the air........that's a pun on words ;) Anyway, maybe this topic is read by some history buffs that did not know about anti-balloon guns.

The sad thing is when my friend got his supply of weather balloons some years back at a surplus
auction it was a whole weather station, the hydogen generator scared him and he gave it to me
complete with about 30 canisters I wish I had it now, but it got culled on the move south.

I will have something figured out as far as a shooter by the time of the event.

You know we might want to make some cardboard balloon silhouettes to do a little pratice on before the actual
competition.

Lance ,I was pleased to be able to restate the brillance of your phrase, on the novice vs pro poppers thing .

As for the rest being a waste of your time , I appologize as this is your thread . I realize now just how valuable your time must be organizing a balloon shoot and all .

The quote below is why I brought up HDT and his trains . You where not wasting your own time there were you ? ;D

I will be building something, likely several somethings.  Golf-ball caliber is one.  10-12-20ga muzzle loading swivel gun will be another.
Several somethings sounds very interesting indeed, as for me, i'll be building a Ballonabwehrkanone, golf ball bore, complete with stock and anti-balloon sights...........I know i don't write as much as i used to, but, look at it this way,Edgar Allan Poe had pen and paper, i have the internet.....
