O.K. i think we have showed that Balloons and Artillery have a place in history, and further history lessons.
As for rules, for the balloon popping event, use your brain and don't shoot down a crop duster, or hit your neighbors house miles away.

I LIKE those rules!

Common sense.

But as Mark Twain is oft quoted, "common sense isn't as common as it's cracked up to be."

Most of us have demonstrated that.   :o

Undoubetedly.  BUT, it he didn't, something or many somethings about telling the truth have been attributed to him.   ;D

Mark Twain sure did say a lot of stuff.........Tim(CW) do you think my universal breech loading fuse lit barrel design, would that make for a decent golf ball sized balloon popper? That's if i'm still welcome at this summers shoot.

Sorry for the delay - I'm changing over computers and my reply didn't get out.

YES, your design is good.  Scale it up.  Standard design principles apply.

AND, you best come armed to the NRV shoot!  You brought some of the most interesting things last time!

Well you know i don't have the materials or the machine tools to make something that big, so i'll be needing your help for the materials and use of your shop. If i don't get to build it, we can still have plenty of fun at the NRV shoot.

Wagons supplying the gas to fill up the balloon, not sure if it's helium or hydrogen.....

Judging from the vintage, I'd guess hydrogen.  Helium wasn't employed commonly (because it's denser) I'd again guess until after the Hindenburg went up in flames.

Union Army observation balloons. As I recall, they didn't work out too well.

There is an expression, still in use today, in the Army:  "when the baloon goes up".  (The observation baloons were launched at the start of the battle.)

Well it's been a while since i've made any posts on this topic, so here goes.......... This topic has drifted all different directions, so i don't see much harm in adding a picture of my big and heavy 8" MK1 powder holder:

I keep finding new things to use that 8" MK1 item on or for, take for instance, it kinda looks like the mount for the 1870 Krupp 3.7cm Ballonabwehrkanone. Anyway here's my version of a balloon popper:

But Wait! There's More!!!..........Remove the stock from the Ballonabwehrkanone, add a handy feature, use a bit of imagination........And the balloon popper transforms into an 1888 1-pounder Rapid-Fire Hotchkiss Gun.

Thanks Everyone, i'd be honored if my pictures made it on the calendar, dog gone, setting the timer on the camera and running over and hoisting that 8" brass on my shoulder was a feat, but i only took 3 pics today, and you see the 3 i took.

We have given a few new guys a hard time about their guns in the past few weeks.  I have to ask.  Is the bore 1/3 of the diameter of the barrel?  it looks like a pipe.
