would you buy anything without a title
« on: February 04, 2010, 10:58:25 AM »
the object in question actually is a pop up camper, dude says it was abandoned at his wife's work place yadi yadi yadi yaw.....
and he has no title...

one time the lady at the tax place where you get license plates and stuff told me if I ever thought about buying something and they did not have a title to run in the opposite direction as fast as I can.

I want to be able to have it in my name, registered to me, everything cool with John Law.

Nope!

the law may vary a bit state to state, but basically you can't get a title legally. There may be a way around it, so catch up to a STATE law enforcement officer and pose the question.  For sure don't put any money out until you know!

In my state you can apply for a lost title.  It takes time and some research but you can do it....People get titles for junk cars all the time.. It is risky...A very old camper I might take a gamble but never anything less than 30 or so years old.  I would approach it with extreme caution.  He would have to sign a bill of sale and I would have to have a copy of his license.

If you do get a bill of sale.
Search you state for a Title Service, most wrecker services can tell you what is required and direct to the proper channels.
Most states have a title procurement program of some sort. I've done this quite a few times Oklahoma calls it Title 42 and it can be filed by anyone.

So far as I know there is no such thing as a title for a trailer here in Bama. Now they do expect you to put a tag on them but even that is ignored by most. You'll see darn few trailers running around the roads here with a tag. Four wheelers are also not titled here and you cannot get a tag for them. They are bill of sale items only.

Every state I have been in will do a lost title for a fee, but you have to be the LEGAL OWNER, in other words the title has to have been in your name before being lost. Some states allow salvage titles for vehicles over a certain age. I have built several trailers, and in WV they can be titled as ASM (assembled). the requirement for that here are a material list, including cost and a certification by a LEO that it is built and has never been titled. Be hard to do that with a camper, although I have seen several home built campers. I still lthink you should check with your local LEO.

Some states title pop-up campers, some don't.  Get the vin or serial number off the rig and check to see that it is not stolen.  If not then it should be no problem.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

No title required here in Ohio for a pop up camper. Registration for a tow behind, simply because it has to have a liscense plate. gypsyman

Just to add....if your state does not require a title, the seller should at least have a Certificate Of Origin. This is what the manufacturer provides to the original owner should the need arise to have the vehicle/trailer, etc., titled.

Why is it there, is it a crime scene?  I would call it into the police and possibly buy off their auction.

Otherwise, I wouldn't even touch it.
