Over a month without a drink.
« on: February 04, 2010, 11:14:13 AM »
Well guys I have gone over a month now without a drink. One reason I drank so much before was because I have very bad back problems. The pain killers I was taking before only lasted through the day until I got home from work. Then I would start drinking after I got home to kill the pain. I am going to a new pain doctor now and he has me on Methadone for the pain. It works around the clock so I am good to go now. Everything I had read about drinking and taking this type of medication says it will kill you. So I have a good reason not to drink now. I also have cut back to eating one meal a day. I only eat at lunch now and have lost over 20 pounds so far from that and not drinking. I told my wife a long time ago if I can get my pain under control I might quit drinking and I have. One bad thing is my back problems are getting worse and the doctor looked me right in the eye and told me I need surgery and I will end up in a wheel chair without it some day. I have Spondylolisthesis of the L5/S1 that has gone from a grade one to a grade two acording to the last Xrays I just had done. I have to say it was a little rough the first week or so but I really do not miss it at all now and am sure I can continue going without drinking. This is the longest I have gone without in many years. ;D Now I need to work on smoking. I know I never could quit smoking if I did not quit drinking. For me if I am drinking I am smoking like a chimney. Now I quit drinking I think I stand a much better chance of quiting smoking. I am not ready to put them down yet but I will soon. Dale

You know what back pain is then. All I can say there is nothing worse. It is like the worst toothach that just will not go away. Dale

Stick with it Dale. I was a heavy drinker years ago. I did something very stupid one day. When my wife told me what i had done. I told her no more drinking for me. I didn't have a drink for 27 years. When she died 4 years ago i started again. Nothing like before but still to much.

Way to go Dale!!! I know from experience what it's like to quit after many years of drinking. It took me 32 years to figure out that I'm allergic to alcohol.....( I break out in handcuffs.... ;D). As far as the back pain goes, my soon to be ex wife goes to the pain management clinic here and she doesn't hesitate to let them know that she doesn't want anything with narcotics in it. There are a number of drugs that can help your pain without narcotics.
I agree with what slim rem 7 said about AA.......it has helped millions of people all over the world in their struggle for sobriety.
I celebrated 6 years of sobriety and a life without drugs on September 20th of last year, so I know that you can do it too!
I found that the only way that I could do it is one day at a time, sometimes one moment at a time.........
Good luck to you!!!!!!!!!

Hang in there Dale. In 6 more months it will be 30 yrs for me with out a drink. Bout the only pain I have is from AGE. (will be 70 in just over 6 mos). But I know about pain. Wife has Fibromyalga(sp) and arithritis. She lives on pain  pills. Last illegal drug was Christmass week of 79 (little pot) I still smoke but have managed to cut that back. Its a long road and a lot of us on the forum have been down that ROAD.
The only other pain I have is when I tell the wife she's getting OLD  ::) and I get hit. (16 yrs older than her)

Congratulations Dale, the first month is the toughest.  Everyday it get's a little easier.  In November I celebrated 20 years without drinking, and I can honestly say that had I not stopped, I wouldn't have what I do today.  It's tough, but it's damned well worth it.

I did a lot of reading on it before I even took the first pill. I almost did not even start taking them because I read where many have died from this drug. I read from the FDA that the reason people od on it is because it takes several days for it to build up in your system and people reach an od level days after due to the build up and taking to high of a dose to begin with. My doctor put me on three 10MG pills twice a day for a total of 6 pills a day. I was scared when I first started taking them so when I started out I only took 1 pill twice a day. After 3 days I started taking 2 pills twice a day. After 3 more days I started taking what was prescribed 3 pills twice a day. I did this so it would build up in my system slowly. Also with this medication if you stop taking for 3 or more days in a row you have to start a reduced dose so you do not od. It is a very dangerous drug if not taken properly. That is why I will not drink while on it because it will kill you. I would much rather go with out the pain than to have a drink. Dale
