Duh...help....reputable gunsmith anyone???

Called my local "smith", and asked about rechambering a 30-30 Handi to 30-30AI.  Sounds simple enough, right?  He wasn't sure how to do it....."how to set the headspace....how to set the barrel back".  Set the barrel back!!!!?? On a Handi? Even I ain't that naive. I guess in a real pinch you could use gauges?
Can anyone recommend a smith who has done one...minus the barrel set back?  Or should I just go for it and do it myself?   I'm not completely mechanically inept,  I used to work on pumps and forced draft blowers in the Navy...tune my Z-1 myself (what's a Z-1???)

alot of smiths won't do mods to chamberings due to liability purposes.
but there are some that will...........

It's not hard, I did mine by hand with a rented reamer, just cut until the rim cutter just touches the rim cut and stop, headspace is determined by the rim not shoulder, so there's no need for any gauges to check it. Use the 357Max reaming info in the FAQs and in the sticky for instructions on how to use the reamer.

Thanks Tim!  I'm going to do it myself.  I'm overly cautious when I do anything to a piece of machinery that can hurt me, so I'll proceed with caution and....I'll call it a learning experience.

I also had to slow it down....now riding a '96 Royal Star V-4 (not the couch, by the way).  I developed a case of Kawasitis in my right wrist, involuntary twisting of the throttle to the extreme.  Well, maybe voluntary.  Never got passed by something I didn't just let go by. So what if I was going 126 in town....?

Actually when rechambering to any Ackley imp the barrel should be set back a thread or two in order to obtain the correct headspace & the slight (.002 crush fit) that you want when a factory round is chambered in a imp chamber in order to prevent any case stretch at the web.  Naturally that can't be done with a handi but we are in luck because the 30-30 headspaces on the rim not the datum line on the shoulder of the case.  When you ream out the 30-30 chamber in the handi just be very careful not to deepen the existing case rim depth or you will increase the headspace.  

Make sure your "smith" knows what this is for.
