how do you tell a pre 64 from one that isnt..............

By the serial number.  If the serial number is under 2,600,000, the rifle is a pre64 Model 94.  Also, many of the Model 94 rifles made between 1964 and 1969 have sheet metal followers in the action.

The part you speak of Oldtrader3 is actually called a "shell carrier", and your right is was a made of sheet metal folded, and was weak to say the very least.

Pre 64, that part was machined and had a certain look. After I think 1970, they were cast and looked similar to pre 64, but not exactly. You really need to look at all the variations, then it will be obvious.

I could not remember when the sheet metal stamping shell carrier was used. Was it then, between 1964 and 1970?
I am aware they went back to a close facsimile to the original.
