Winchester Model 52B project
« on: February 04, 2010, 04:01:24 PM »
Good day,

As you might have noticed, I just posted another question.  But this one will make all you Win. 52B folks tear your hair and look for where I live ;D
I am the proud owner of a "customized" 52B;  barrel is twenty inches, measured to the receiver, a bolt missing just rear of the bolt,  the original externally adjusted scope mounts in place, no safety, but a un-usual but, kinda like it, some light wood, silioette type, stock
Will any of you folks, now you heard my tale :P, advise any gunsmiths that cater to 52s?  I'd like modern scope mount holes drilled and tapped, some kind of pillor bedding, bolt replaced and a safety installed.
Someone told me that if a barrel is cut at the incorrect point in the rifling, the gun won't shoot.  Never read or heard that before.
Any comments (now be gentle :') appreciated. Hope you and yours are well, and looking forward to a great new year ;D

God Bless

Bill Calfee has articles in precision shooting. Has long been a proponent of cutting barrels back to get the best accuracy out of the 22lr. You could do a goole search and see what comes up. I have a 1946 52B (great year same as me ) with a kenyon trigger. Letoff is really spooky. Almost like you wish it off. I had 1" of the chamber end of the bbl removed as I had the 6 o'clock shadow which is usually caused by firing many rounds and getting erosion at the center bottom of the chamber. Mine extended all the way to about 5 and 4 o'clock and no amount of brushing, cleaning or praying would remove it. So basically I have a new chamber and throat. You also could google winchester 52B parts and see what comes up. Or try gunparts aka numrich. They are grand old rifles and they ain't making any more. Come to think on it I think that no U.S. gun manufacturer makes the likes of the win 52 series, win model 70 with marksman stock unless you count the custom shop of remington. Their 40x series starts over 2 grand and don't know if they even make a 22rf match rifle. That's why there is such a market for new match rifles regardless of caliber. I've a win 70 30-06 match rifle with the marksman stock sitting in my safe. One of those good deals that I've since forgotten about. Frank

[I am the proud owner of a "customized" 52B;  barrel is twenty inches, measured to the receiver,]
- "Custom" is how YOU like it - no one else.

[ a bolt missing just rear of the bolt, no safety - I'd like the bolt replaced and a safety installed]
 - Early, non-speedlock M52B's have a wing-type safety on the rear of the bolt.  If you get the proper bolt, the safety should be on it.

[ the original externally adjusted scope mounts in place - I'd like modern scope mount holes drilled and tapped ]
 - Selling the gennie mounts would likely pay for your gunsmithing bill

[ a un-usual but, kinda like it, some light wood, silioette type stock - I'd like some kind of pillor bedding]
 - I'd give it a shooting test first - It will most likely be plenty accurate, and an improvement like pillar bedding won't make it much better.  Call it, a "poor return on investment"

[Someone told me that if a barrel is cut at the incorrect point in the rifling, the gun won't shoot.  Never read or heard that before.]
 - Me neither / Maybe the Full Moon was out / horse-pukey.
