Instant Check System-NOT!
« on: February 05, 2010, 06:01:53 AM »
I got a call from my local gun shop to say my BC .45 Colt is in and ready to be picked up. I went down and filled out all the paper work, paid for everything and while the dealer was initiating the background check I got to look the gun over. The good news is that it has some of the very finest looking walnut grain I've ever seen on a gun. The steel factory sights are so much better than I expected, especially after getting those plastic garbage sights on my .500 S&W Handi. Overall fit and finish is fantastic! Then I got smacked with the bad news. PICS (Pennsylvania Instant Check System) is down so yes they do have the gun, but no I still can't take it home. So much for an instant check.

Computer systems are great when they're working, not so hot when they're down because there usually isn't an option to work with.  :-\

I don't know about PA, but in MT. if you have a CCW they don't have to make the call at all. They just photo copy your permit and attach it to the paperwork. Easy and simple.

When my wife and I were paying for some items at a local store , the computer went down .. The young girl at the counter didn't even know how to make exact change for the customers because the little digital computer register couldn't tell her.  Kinda sad really.

I never have any luck with the instant check system.  The automated system always transfers to a live person who asks a lot of questions (maybe it has to due with my past job).  I've learned to allow plenty of time for the process and I even warn the retailer to expect it....usually they give me funny looks.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

Could be worse.
Here in CA we have an 11 Day wait from the day you do the paper work.  And if by chance you go over 30 days you have to re do the paper work and wait another 11 days.  Not to mention all the seconday ID you need to bring.

Ive only had to wait if I buy at a franchise store, like Gander or Sportsmans.  I have my CCW, and like was mentioned, do the paperwork, he makes a few copies and im out the door in about 10 mins.  Its very nice.

Hope you can get it soon.

I LOVE ALABAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The last two guns I bought (a 357 pistol and 7mm-08 H&R) took about 5 minutes each on paperwork.

When I go into one particular store I fill out my 4473 as I enter. That way, if I leave with a new toy or 5, the paperwork is already done.

Here in PA, everyone including officers have to have a PICS check upon purchasing a firearm from a FFL.  Our LTCF doesn't qualify for any exemption.

A year or two ago, Missouri scrapped all their state gun laws and they just operate on the Federal Default rules. I am a permanent resident alien, if I buy in Missouri, the only ID is my driver's license and they make me wait 48-72 hours. If I buy next door in Kansas, they make me wait, and they require 3 consecutive documents, dated 1 month apart, with your name and address on it, something like three most recent phone bills, 3 most rcent electric bills etc.

My living rent free in the basement of my ex-wife's place, I have no utility bills. Olathe Gun Shop is holding a rifle until I get the three documents in order, but I decided I will get my money back and buy in a Missouri store or from a private party.

brian, try illinois. unless they changed it, you can buy here as if in mo. few years ago, was in a shop with brother that lived in mo. we're in illinois shop. dealer would have to see my foid card and wait 24hrs to pickup long gun. but to my brother-mo resident- just show his drivers' license for proof of residency, lay down the money and walk out with long gun NOW!! what a rip... jather...

Did the rules change. Thought a "delayed" was for 3 days. If it did not turn into a "denied" in those 3 days, it automatically became "approved".

The guy that i deal with in the lousy state of NY use to look at my CCW and out the door i went with the gun. The last gun i bought he said he couldn't do that anymore. Had to make a phone call. Said it could take up to two hours. He had an answer in about five minutes.

I walk into my local gun shop pick out a rifle, shotgun or handgun , fill out federal paperwork, NCIS check, pay for it and walk out the door.  The handgun can be carried in the open loaded or cancealed loaded no problem don't need a CCW (not required/available) not problems - our state constitution guarantees it !!!.  Go a mile west into NY or a few miles south into Mass. and it is a whole different world.

Let's all thank Kennedys, Brady, Schumer, Feinstein and their holy brethern (and cistern ;D) for making the world a safer place.  It is SAFER isn't it???  Can't you feel the safety?  I can...it's on the left side where my thumb rests.
Kentucky...CCDW card, fill out the yellow sheet and walk.  Open carry is an option here too.  There's an "oldtimer", older than my 62 years it appears,  who carries his 10" .22 Ruger with all the finish worn down to the aluminum frame in his hip holster, daily at the little neighborhood market/deli/liar's club about a mile from the house.  God bless him and more power to him.

I need to find out how it is here in Texas, now that I am going to claim it as home.  In Michigan, I showed my CCW, filled out the fed form and not the Nics check and walked out, handgun or rifle.  If you didn't have a CCW, you had and extra form you needed for a handgun and when you applied for it, the Sherriffs dept ran you for 'want's and warrents.'  It's is even easier here in Texas.  There are no 'special' waits or restrictions even on handguns (beyond the NICS).  God bless Texas!  44 Man

Here in Tasmania (a little island state off the south coast of Australia), we have to wait 28 days to get a permit to acquire a firearm, regardless of the number of firearms already owned.  During that period you get a visit from a nice police officer who checks that you have a gun safe.  If you don't collect the firearm within 90 days you have to start the whole process again, and pay a new fee too.
