Sounds to me like it's too late.  If a deal sounds to good to be true or if you have to make a rescission "right now" without being given time to check into it, it is most likely a scam.  May be time to take responsibility for mom & dad's finances.

The horse is already out the yard so slambing the gate shut isant any good.
what comes to mind is the social engeneering these sort of scammers use, they do snag people I thought should have known better.

Yes yes my 66yro father cleaned out ther joint checking account, then he cleaned out the joint savings account (all ther fall back money is gone) and just the lateist thing is the maxing the credit card out.
They both still work so they do have some income, the nasty reality is they may be in for big problems on the way shortly.

The scarey unknown's I ask myself is do these scammers have my folks SSN's? they each could have a multitude of preapproved cards in ther name (identity theft??)

I havent been back in contact with my 64yro Mother who is not a willing praticipant in this get rich scheme, Me wishing she reports this to ther State Police and since this takes place over state lines and off shore this may involve the FBI.
I did some searching and coughed up a little that could be usefull to others.

Its going to be a long day at work with this on my mind.

he  even  wiped out  his  401k  fund  to invest in a movey
5 years  ago
6 months  ago  he was  about  to blow 20k of his dads  money on  another  scam
while  his  phone was cut  off

SOME  TIMES  IT IS  NOTHING  MORE THAN A GAMBLEING ADDICTION

I had a client send 250,000.00 to a Canadian scam.  Police take a report.  That is about all that happened.  I filed his return with the report.  It created an NOL, and he got back some taxes.  The 250M is gone.

Had one give a credit card to a call for cruise tickets.  That upset life.  Had to change checking account and have Social Securityu sent to new account.  What a pain.  If they have account number they can drain the account.

Not a high priority for sheriff in Hillsborough county to go to Canada.  The elderly are targets.

I found out more this weekend, seems its a offshore Jamacan lottery scam, after googleing it up thers tons of info on this subject, one relates how a 70yro woman blew her retirement and in the end killed herself once it set in the foolish thing she did. some the victims still expect any day ther winnings are gonna come rolling in even months after they been scammed, My Father is one them, he firmly believes he's won some lottery, Mom printed out the Google'd stuff on these scammers, she was able to get ahold of Dads cell phone and check the call log these guy's in Jamaca were calling Dad as much as 13 times a day, the phone bill was over $700, she googled up one the Jamacan phone number's and they had a whole bunch of scam info related to the phone numers he was calling, she printed that out as well.
My fatther is a very private and stiffnecked.........he always has been so it makes this difficult getting through to him, so far he's angery at everyone thats telling him its a overseas scam and he was took for thousands of dollars. not actually a thing a proud person wants to hear.

Scamming and stealing from the elderly is worse than just being a thief. This is money these folks have worked all their life for and cannot be replaced. Scum doing this should be executed as soon as caught. No loss to society. An old friend used to say, give em a fair trial within 30 days of their execution.  POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

My brother got taken in by something somewhat close (well - kinda.  his wife talked him into it).  They wanted a dog, but rather than buy one locally she found an ad on the internet to have a puppy shipped via airline from Washington state (don't ask - she wanted some specific breed that is pretty rare around here).  They mailed off the $400 payment.  A guy with an accent calls them up (number traces back to somewhere in Africa) and keeps saying that there is an issue with the stuff - shipping has went up, etc - they need a little more.  They squeeze about $300 more out of him $50-100 at a time.  By that time he's decided it's a scam and convinces his wife the same.  He writes off the $700 as gone (honestly it's a lot less than some people get taken for so in a way he's gotten off light), but his wife persistently keeps calling the number back asking for a refund.  They keep saying that they can't right yet because the lady that raises the dogs is sick and needs the money for the hospital bills.

Then my sister in law managed to pull of sumpin weird.  She tells them that she understands and the she'd be perfectly willing to give the money for the hospital bills instead, but she asked that they wire the money back to her so that she could directly donate it to that instead of for the dog, since she could write it as a donation and tax deduct that.  She even offers to add in a bit more and make the donation an even $1000.  They actually wire the money back with an address to mail it back to.  Once she gets their money back she cuts off communication.  They sent a few more emails after a while claiming to put curses on them and such, but they just ignored them without responding.

Shocked the hell of of me, but they actually got the money back.

my  parents  have an  older  friend

similar sad situation

we  need to keep a closer  eye on our parents while they are aging

after  all  they kept an eye on us  a long time ago

now  its our turn

i  am sure  they had trouble  letting us  go  and  when   the time is right
as we  will  have trouble  stepping  and  knowing when the time  is right

it  can't hurt  to start  getting  closer
the  world  is unforgiving  once the assets are gone
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs

a friend of mine father-in-law is getting taken with the dead relative in Great Britian scam. no matter how many times we tell or show him these stories about scams he will be quiet about the subject for a long time and then tell us he sent more money. he is into it for at least 8000.00 now.

Both my parents are gone(in their late 80's) we used to talk about such as this in their day it was preachers wanting you to send money so they could
pray for you. My mother used to say i will just go to my local preacher
and let him pray for me.
It is hard for me to believe that people fall for these scams, it is not just
the elderly. I read some report that Americans fall for these scams to
the tune of about 7-10 million $ a year.

That figure sounds low to me. I would think it would be much higher. Dale
