30-06 AI 26" ?
« on: February 06, 2010, 04:25:20 AM »
I'm contemplating a 30-06 Ackley Improved, and from what I've read, they perform best in longer barrels. Could I take a 25-06 barrel and have it rebarreled to 30 cal, and then have the chamber reamed to AI?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a used 30-06 barrel and then do the AI reaming? I know you wouldn't have the 26 inch barrel then though.

Just a question. To answer yours I don't see why not.

You could have the 25-06 rebored, not rebarreled, I've got a 338-06 A-Square that used to be a 26" 25-06, Wayne York rebored it for me.

I made a few 8mm-06 AIs. It would be a lot cheaper to buy a 26inch 30 cal barrel, and have it finish reamed to AI.
The improvement is worth the money.

Not gonna happen on an H&R, a stub will cost as much as a rebore, plus the cost of the barrel.

I took a look at the .30-06 AI and on average it should provide you with about 100 FPS gain from any bullet weight. Of course like other AI cartridges you could still fire standard .30-06 cartridges in the rifle and in AI configuration it should show reduced case stretching and easier extraction than the standard .30-06. Of course a rifle factory chambered in .300 Win. Mag. or .300WSM would give you even more of an increase in velocity. I guess it comes down to whether or not it's worth the cost to you to have the .30-06 AI. If that's what you want don't be discouraged. I know I've done a lot of things to rifles that have had others shaking their heads in disapproval, but I thought were worth it to me.

I'll second that. It's your money. If that's what you want, do it and never look back. Never second guess your decision.

I don't have a handi in 30-06 AI (yet ;D) but i do have a Springfield O3A3 chambered for it . with a 26" heavy barrel I get 300 H&H velocity with less powder used in 150 & 180 gr bullets. never tried any thing else because it is so accurate with them.At 500 meters it does a job on the rams if I do mine ;D
I use published loads from an old Ackley book.In A Handi I would start low and work up gradually .

/CONCUR,

Missed the Handi part of the equation. Being that your looking at an Handi, Id scrap the project, save you money, and build a model 700 in 06AI.

Got one, but since the barrel can't be set back, you'll end up with a 280 Improved-improved!   ;D

A Ruger No 1 in 300 WM has a 26" barrel and, that's more or less what I want. But I figure I can get a 25-06 bbl and have it bored and reamed for half that. It certainly would be easier if H&R made 26" barrels in 30-06, but they don't. I have a 22" 30-06 barrel already, but my understanding is that the AI works best in longer barrels.

I don't know, maybe I'll just save up for that No 1.

Another project I will not get to........so, since we are talking about it here, I have a Ruger No.1-B 30-06 barrel, 26" that was a take-off and will make what you want in a stub build up.
