Anyone here tried this new caliber?
« on: February 06, 2010, 04:28:11 AM »
Does anyone have experience with this one?    I'm finding a small amount of discussion elsewhere on the 358 WSSM.  This wildcat is being chambered in custom rebarrel jobs to provide real rifle ballistics while complying with a states "pistol length case rule" (1.625' I think).    I find a benchrest gunmaker offering it for about 900 plus your gun, and one gunsmith using Douglas barrlels and doing it for about 600 plus your gun.  I think the gun needs to be a short mag action, and the ones I've read about are on the Browning A-bolt, Win model 70, and the Rem Model 7.   Thanks.

There is so much overlap in cartridges, calibers and bullets now.  Please no more.

Work on something else.

It was made for Indiana rifle regulations. 35 caliber and larger and a case lenght of no more than 1.625. Don't quote me on the length though.

Check out the sponsor we have on the Indiana Forum, BFG Design. They make something real similar to what you described.

Guys, guys, guys. . . .

Don't you realize that the reason that Indiana and other states adopted the pistol rounds rule is so that they could bring back rifle hunting, while limiting the range and deadliness of the rifle rounds?   This has been a wonderful thing for lots of folks.

But, if other folks are just going to create super souped-up rounds, to crank high power and range out of the pistol rounds specs, then what is plainly going to happen is that the game departments are going to look at these new rounds, which totally defeat the purpose of the pistol round rules, and end up recommending banning all rifle hunting again.

The same thing has happened in states that permitted muzzle loading seasons, where the states had to later deal (and ban) the newer super-tech muzzle loaders which all intents and purposes are the same as modern bolt-action 30-06 rifles.  And in some of these states, they are now just recommending that ALL special muzzleloader seasons be abolished.

Really, can't you just use a pistol-round rifle and enjoy the hunt?  Can't you get within 150 yards of a deer and place your shot?

Mannyrock,
I will attempt to answer your question. IMHO, no! I say this for the same reason that we have cars that can drive over 150mph with hundreds of cubic inches and horsepower to spare. All this and we're only able to drive 65mph. For that same reason, we have cartridges and rifles that are capable of 300yd kills, they fit within the regs and are few enough that they may not punish the whole for just a few that take the laws to the extreme point of their writings. I think this is human nature as much as driving the speed limit and not a mile less is.
Perhaps state lawmakers will be more specific when they're writing laws in the future if they want them understood one way and only one way. Has anyone heard of any complaints that would make them consider changing the laws back?

Thanks, Dinny
