Want a real BAR ????? Holy Grail???

I been drooling again at this OOW Bar in 30-06 semi auto... Its a beast of a gun but lots of firepower in its orginal full auto form.  I've heard war stories about the bar's.

Thank God we still live in a free country and in all the past and present wars we had people willing to stand up and fight for it too.  May God bless them all. And I hope the ones who are fighting right now come home safe soon too.

A friend of mine has an OOW semi-automatic BAR.First time I shot it I hit a golf ball at 100 yards.They are awesome to shoot.

My Ole man carried one for 5 years island hoping during WWII.

He said he would burn up one every week or so, and had to use a Garand until he could come across another BAR.

All his life he recommended the Garand, never the BAR.

Wasn't the BAR designed during WWI as a sniper rifle so the shooter would not have to take it off his shoulder to recock it?  I don't think they were designed as full auto 'assault rifles' as you could burn them up with sustained fire.  We used some of them in Vietnam, on occasion but with all the other auto rifles, including the Garand, they had seen their day.

The BAR's were for heavy supporting fire In WW2, they can spit out and lay down the 30-06 rounds like no other weapon in a covering fire situation. (in full auto). Next to the '41 johnson.  There were two BAR guys in ever squad.  The trick was one would fire while the other one reloads.  So the squad always had even covering fire from the BAR's.  The germans hated this weapon too. One more trick to survival was the BAR guy would open fire last so the BAR couldn't be picked off by firing first it has a unique sound.  I guess the M1 garands, M1 carbines and the Thompson's would cover the BAR's sound somewhat and make it hard to pick out as to where it was.  I'm kind of surprised they only had 20rd mags.

The notorious bank robbers Bonney & Clyde used BAR's and so did the leo's who shot them.

    No, the BAR was never designed as a sniper rifle.  John Browning was specifically requested to design a light machine gun, small enough for squad use, capable of carry by one man, but large enough to use the .30-06 round.  The existing machine guns (water cooled Brownings, with water cylindrical tank wrapped around the front barrel), were extremely heavy, required a 2 man crew, and could only be fired from a heavy tri-pod.

True, true....and in theory the BAR man was supposed to be "walking suppressive fire" towards the enemy lines in WWI when advancing on enemy trenches or positions.    Don't know if it was ever used as such in the Great War.

  Yes, the BAR was used in WWI, with great success.  It did exactly what it was supposed to do.  Give machine gun burst capability, on the run, to squad size groups.

Made in 1918 and served though the 60s until replaced by the M-60

Didnt even know they were that old, see the cool stuff you learn here

I shot exactly 20 rounds in one and it was fun! I mostly shot 2-3 round bursts, and their is most truly some muzzle rise going on by the time the third bullet leaves the tube.

Well, he was a Marine, so he had probably seen one or two before the movie was filmed. ;)

I watched that movie this weekend.   McQueen certainly knew how to handle that weapon...he was very comfortable with it on film.   That scene where the San Pablo fights its way through the Chinese blockade is classic.   Authenticity with the uniforms and weapons.    The Master Chief was carrying a 1917 cutlass as well.

  I would never think of a rifle, that weighs 27 pounds empty, as being a Holy Grail of any kind.  :-)
