Wads and Recipies
« on: February 06, 2010, 12:28:06 PM »
Hi,

Looking for a little help.  I am getting a combo Mossberg International with both 20 and 28 gauge barrels.  There is plenty of data for the 20ga, I am having a bit of trouble finding data for the 28.  I have a bunch of once fired Win AA hulls but I only have some Rem sp28 wads.  Powder would be unique.

I would like to use up this bag while I am waiting on some winchester wads.  Anyone have any info on this combination.

Paul

If in doubt, go to the powder company.  Here is ALLIANT's online reloading data for the 28 gauge;

You really should rethink your powder for the 28. There might be some loads out there for it but that's a very poor choice for the 28.

Hi Graybeard,

I have been looking for some 20/28 but nobody has any around here.  I have Unique, Blue Dot, 700X, and Lil_Gun.

What range of powders have you found to work well in the 28.

I have used Unique with AA hulls and WWAA wads not Rem. I also use Duster 2834 wads both work well I have also used Green Dot powder with both wads but not Rem.

I've loaded more with Green Dot than all others combined but have used PB, not real happy with that one. More recently I've switched to Universal and I guess the last 5000-6000 or so have been loaded with that.

Back when I could get the old Remington hulls and wads Green Dot was my number one choice but it doesn't seem to work as well in the newer hulls as it's a bit too bulky it seems.

I switched to AA HS hulls and in them Universal is just perfect.

I keep whittling away at my 16lb keg of GD, and a boat load of old WWAA hulls I have a 20 gal barrel full.

You are a fortunate man.

Back in my competition days ('70s and '80s) I used both Win AA and the Remington hulls but preferred the Remington as my preferred load of 12.5 grains of GD and the RP wad fit that hull to perfection and my loader was set up to work best with it. The shorter AA hull didn't work well with that load so required some fiddling around to load but they too worked well once I got a load for them worked out.

These days 28 and .410 hulls are hard to come by and very expensive generally due to that. Supplies are short and finding them once fired is rare. Having a large supply of the hull you like and powder sure is nice.

I've gone thru a lot of cans of Green Dot in my day. When I owned my own skeet and trap range and shot competitively it didn't take long to run thru a can of it. I used it for 12, 20 and 28 in those long ago days and it took a lot of jugs to keep me shooting.
