H 322: it gets with the program in .45/70

I had never used H 322 before, always H 4895. I looked in the Lyman book and for the leverguns and a 405 gr bullet they started at 50.0 grains.  I kept adjusting the powder thrower and when it got to 49.0 I called it good.

at the range:
shot three old rounds with 45.0 H 4895, Rem 405

1357, 1322, 1323

'bout what I expected....so I chamber three of the H 322 loads in the gun....49.0 H 322, Rem 405....touch one off       what the....man it stung me pretty good.....look at the chrono..

1703  holy cow! this is a ported guide gun with a 18.5?" barrel...

the next two shots were 1648 and 1737

this load with also perfectly fills with powder to where the bottom of the bullet will be when seated and crimped

46 grains of H322 with a 405 WLNGC bullet is very accurate in my Guide Gun. Not very consistent, but still shoots an inch at 100 yards. Velocity is just over 1500 FPS. No need to run it harder.

I agree, the hypervelocity .45/70 doesn't make much sense to me.  I know a lot of people want to take it to the limit, but not me. 

Its another instance of a chrono turning the lights on.

I loaded a lot of 405gr remington bulk bullets with 52.0gr of H322 in starline brass for 1925fps, great load and when using kodiak bonded 405 and same load will shoot thru a 25+ inch spruce tree.

I had the same surprise with 300gr HP's and H-322 in my ported Guide Gun. My good hunting loads were getting 1800fps. It tried some H322 loads and got 2200+fps. Never hunted with them though cause I switched to a 405gr load and haven't tried the H322 with them yet.

The 300 grain HP (Hornady) is what I shoot most often. However, I got alot of unburned powder at 52 grains of H-322. Someone told me that H-322 works best with heavier bullets in the 45/70, so I now use IMR 4198 for the 300 grain and 322 for the 405 grain bullet.

My pet loads are 50.5Gr for the 405GR rem and 51.5GR for the 425 WFN. Both shoot to the same point, the 425 about an 1" higher. Very accurate loads. Kicks like a mother.

I haven't cronied the loads but I guesstimate somewhere in the mid 1700s for the guide guide un-ported.

I shot 1 black bear so far with the 405, broke 2 shoulder bones. Very impressive.

The load produces some very consistent ammo over temp, and from what I hear SD is very consistent for the powder/bullet combos mentioned in most of these posts using H-322. It was personally recommended to me by the owner @ beartooth bullets.
