I was lucky enough to have had a dad that had a mechanics shop and he made it a point to teach me auto mechanics and repair. With his help I was able to build three of what I consider great muscle cars. My first was a 1965 GTO convertible, 389 with a six pack carb and 4 speed, second was a 1969 GTO with a 400 and 4 speed. The most fun I had was with a Ford Fairlane 500 Sport Coupe. It had the small block 289 and a 4 speed tranny. It had more room inside than either GTO (great for Friday nite dates) and was almost as fast. Definately drank less gas than the Goats. Boy them were the days!

The Ford 289 and the Chevy 283 were great engines. They didn't have the ponies like the big blocks, but they ran well. I think the 289 and 283 were a couple of the best and simplest v8 engines ever made. Yes, them were the days!

my favorite muscle car is a truck. i have a 1967 GMC 1/2 ton shortbox. i have a 350 v-8/350 turbo that i'm building up for it. going the old school route with fuelie heads and a cbx intake/4 barrel and non lockup trans w/ shiftkit. the cam kit should be in the motor this week sometime, along with high volume water,oil and fuel pumps. the fuelie heads are at the machine shop , but the flat top pistons and crank are in the block.
with the dana 44 rear axle, i have 3.73 gears, so it should really run

Anyone remember the Javelin?

3 of us went in with some cash and purchased a well used one from a GA dealership when I was in the service so we could get off post to the Bars on the weekend when we were stationed at Fort Gordon for advanced training. (we use to have to pump the brakes like heck going down Gordon Highway well in advance of red lights to stop) Deal was when orders came in the last of the 3 to receive theirs got to keep the car. I got orders for Korea first , Jerry got orders for Germany , and the third guy can't remember his name now from U.P. Michigan got orders for somewhere in the states. He ended up with the Javelin. Wonder if he ever got those brakes fixed?.

My vote goes to a '67 Mustang GT. I owned one in HS days, It was nothing to brag about by the time I drove it. I spent a bunch of minimum wage dollars on that thing! I also learned a lot about mechanicing as well. Finally restored it enough to get all my money , but not my time out of it. I miss that car still.

El Camino. Never owned one, but always admired them....especially this one....

Muscle cars... now this is a good thread.

If I could pick one to own and drive, not just re-sell... probably a '73 Trans Am with the SD-455 motor. Make mine Buccaneer Red, please...

I came a little late for muscle cars, but I tried. I've had a three Mustangs - a 66 289 four-speed, a 67 289 3-speed (Dad gave me his) and an 88 LX 5.0. The 66 was the lightest, had the 67 longest (and learned to drive in it) and the LX was far and away the fastest. I was more of a bike guy....

My favorite was my 1969 Ford XL convertible. I ordered it with the 429, AC and it was black with a white top. I drove it over 200000 miles.

kind of a tie between 62 catalina coupe with hi-output 389(not stock) and 67 belvedere 383. had them between 17 and 21 years of age and numerous visits to see the judge,the one behind the bench. real favorite was not a car but a 70 trident,most all learned to ignore a bike after a couple runs looking at the tail light.fastest was a triple two stroke kaw. i traded it quick.it was too fast for me.if anyone ever rode one of these crotch rockets they know the feeling. what a rush but,extremely dangerous.

When I was 16 I almost got Dad to co-sign the loan for a 1974 H2 triple.. one of the purple ones.

In retrospect, I'm fortunate that he declined!

Thing is... impressive as those triples seemed Back In The Day, their numbers - by modern standards - are pretty tame. But at the time that flexi-frame, rear-weight bias and howlin' powerband seemed pretty impressive...

When I was a kid back in the early 1970s, a neighbor had a Roadrunner. Another had a Pantera. One guy had an AMX. A couple had Corvettes. After his brother wrapped his 289 V-8 re-powered Austin Healy 100-6 around a tree, my dad bought a new 383 Charger with a four-speed in the "plum crazy" color. That was a pretty nice car. He eventually traded it in on a Ford Escort, of all things. Sheeeesh......

But the car that I vowed to the moon and stars that I would own one day was the AAR 'Cuda with the 340 "Six Pac" like another of our neighbors had. Ohhhhhhhh Yeaaaaaaaaaah!

I traded a fully restored Triumph TR-4 A and a poo-load of cash for mine. I spent an even bigger poo-load on a full-on restoration of the car, which was getting on 20 years old when I acquired it.

I guess the AAR 'Cuda is what you fellas who were all grown up back then would call a "pony car" and not a "muscle car." Sounded pretty muscular to my five and six year old ears when my childhood neighbor fired his up in the morning. I wish I had never EVER sold that car. I regretted it as soon as the buyer got it on the trailer and hauled it away.

There's a good ol non-muscle car, the 1963 Ford Falcon station wagon with the rat pack six and three on the tree. Naugahyde interior. Enough room in the engine compartment so you could walk around in it to work on things. A radio that had tubes in it so when you turned it on you had to wait for it to warm up before it would play. More interior room than a Chevy Suburban of today, and about 25mpg on the highway to boot (if you could find a highway). Take it to the station and tell 'em you'd like $2 worth of regular for the week's driving. A lube job every 3000 miles. Hatcha! Hatcha!!!

1966 mustang fast back, 375hp 390, 4 spd, no room under the hood for
p.s, p.b, or a/c. Just enough room underneath for vettes and goats to slide
under.
1967 fairlane 500, 390, 4spd. canary yellow.

yes , I saw a great episode where they restored a 68 Bronco

Here was final product

They hid the woofer in the 5 Gal AUX Fuel can in the back of the Bronco. It was an awesome build

One of the funniest things I ever saw was in an Atlanta parking Garage .. Someone had a YUGO with a club through the steering wheel for anti theft.. I always thought some one would break in - steal the club out of the steering wheel - and leave the YUGO

Depends on what era you are talking about.
The STUTZ BEARCAT was a pretty wild ride in it's day along with the FABULOUS HUDSON HORNET.
I kind of liked the 50s and 60s myself, although the 70s,80s, & the 90s also had some bad stuff out there.
Here are a few of mine.

1st one is my 1956 BEL AIR I restored right after getting out of school.
End of year production with a factory 57 283.
They ran out of 265s at the end of 56.

Next is a one of a kind factory #s match 1970 BUICK LA SABER with a factory mismatched 455 Stage 1.

Mommy's 1996 SS IMPALA
160 MPH on the speed odometer
At 133 mph still in third gear I ran out of road and had to let off.

Here is my latest 1956 BEL AIR.
It has a long ways to go.

Of course there is my 1979 K10 play truck.

One I never got but wanted was a 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL.

I don't care what anyone says, they don't make cars like they did in the sixties.

I love the cuda, charger, gto but the only one I ever owned was a '66 mustang with a high performance 289. I bought it off a friend and bought a wrecked one with a mint interior. Put them side by side in a three car garage and went to work for four months over the winter.

New trans and clutch with a solid steel flywheel, floor pans, painted the interior and switched out the parts. I took it to an interior shop for new carpet and headliner. New tires and rims, 15's on the front and 16 x 50's on the back.

It had a real heavy cam, cherry bomb mufflers with most of the glass gone, it would sit at a stop and idle with that muscle car badup-badup-badup.

Had it out of the interior shop for four days and got rearended by some woman. Totalled the car.

I was a line mechanic during the late sixties. I was the guy to see when you wanted a edelbrock and holly installed. Most of the dealership guys wouldn't touch anything 'altered'. I did a lot of cams, carbs, gears, distributors, headers, etc. As a result I worked on/drove pretty much everything, Chevs, Pontiacs, Mopars, Fords and even one Studebaker GoldenHawk. It was my expirience that 1964-5 were banner years for all the brands. Fun cars and the highest quality. In '66-67 everything got bigger and quality started falling. In '71 they cut the compression and cams and quality continued to decline. I still like that 65Pontiac and this 65Ford Sprint.
