New lead melter

Decided to try out the new lead melter I built. It's not finished but had to try it out. Made some ammo for my cannon 1# balls. I used wheel weights. The kiln will hold 150# at least of lead. It's bottom pore uses tapered plug in the bottom works great.



Made 50 balls in hour and half. Golf ball size

I think my pin would float up if I get it full of lead. I will have to add a spring.

Or a weight to the end of the handle.

Have you cut any of the balls in half to see if there is a void inside?  Heats with propane?

Have you shot lead balls this size before out of you cannon? Pressure and reduced loads?

That's a lot of lead to heat up in that beast!  I think when summer rolls around

you'll be needing one of those asbestos suites to get close enough to do any casting........

or even better , put a 2" rockwool insulation on the outside
that will also do that your melting pot will use less propane

I'm in the process of ordering some ceramic fiber blankets for another job and was going to order an extra one. The blankets come wet and you mold them to your needs. And then heat up the item and then the blankets set in place. When I break off the feed tube, if theirs air it shows up there and I just toss it back in the meter. Is the feed tube called a punt?

How much of a taper on the valve?  I'd love to see the details.

I'd like to build one for doing both cannon balls and ingots for bullet casting.

To tell you the truth I don't know the proper taper dimensions. I just happened to have a tapered reamer in a bunch of stuff in a box and the numbers are rubbed off. I did have the cross slide on my lathe set just past 3 deg. I made the female parts first. Then used black permanent ink on the mail to see the points of contact. And made an adjust mint tell there was even wear. The plug is water tight.

It's cool alright , But having been around hot metal ,it looks kinda shaky to me/top heavy . Unless it welded to the table ......

Can't really tell in the small photo, but it does look like the legs are tack welded to the plate.

Fine project , Looks good to these old eyes , and .... I finally found a shop that looks like mine !    ::)
The table top it's tacked to looks substantial enough to hold the "super pot"  ;D
