Tyler's first crack at trapping
« on: November 05, 2003, 08:16:18 PM »
The weather pretty much doomed coon trapping for me but as the old say goes... For every cloud there is a silver lining...or something like that. :)

My son Tyler (12) got his first crack at trapping.  And just like his Dad, he kept the Freund legacy alive.  First trapped critter was a....

Here is a picture of the trapper and his prize...

He really wanted to catch a coon so I kept him out of school Monday but there was no activity at all.

Tuesday, he went back to school and I pulled all the sets.  Wished I would have kept him out of school again as he caught his first coon.  Glad I had the digital camera with me so I could at least show him how it looked as I walked up to his set.

He also caught another....

I was pretty proud of him.  He set his traps while it snowed, was windy and cold.  Most kids would have rather sat in front of the TV on a nice day.  Even with the lack of activity, he kept a postitive attitude and enjoyed his first crack at trapping.  It might have been the worst coon trapping season I will ever remember as far as numbers but it will also be one of the greatest season as I really enjoyed the time spent with him and he made it a great time.

I do enjoy these kinds of stories, DAD!

So it got cold and the coon went in?  or you're out of time ?  Won't the coon go to moving during warm spells?  If you can snare you can get the boy out after coyotes etc.

Tim  as WQ  these storys  are great.  It has been a hard yr to catch coon and coon nbrs are down here in central and northern Wisconsin.  Not all becuase of weather but  the population is down for some reason..... Havent seen any dead coon over summer so cant say what reason is. Congrats to Tyler and  maybe you can get Tyler to run a weasel line if you have them by you....  From the tall grass in pictures i think you should have a population.

Thanks for the replies!!

The coon are holed up for the most part now.  Unless we get some weather in the high 30's, dryland trapping for coon is slow to nil.  I still have some baited coni-boxes out in some abandoned farmsteads.  Everything is froze over and my springs that I trapped last year are dried up as we didn't get much rain this fall.  Our rifle season starts tomorrow and we are plagued with roadhunters.  I always pull my sets by the road as they will shot/steal anything they can see or get their hands on as most of the roadhunters are slobs to say the least.  We will get more trapping in for mink and coyotes after deer season so we are far from quitting for the year.  We have good numbers of mink and I enjoy that the most when it comes to trapping.  Tyler is looking forward to that too.

We got two different weatherman then.  Can we trade??  They are saying cold, cold and more cold here.  Course they sure were wrong last week so there is always hope.  If it would warm up, Tyler and I can sneak a few sets in on the boss's land to avoid the deer hunters.  I am staying tuned in to the weather channel!!  :-)

The sad thing here is I've seen more coon this year then in a long time.  Numbers would have been pretty good.  I took 2 big boar that are the size of  a young grizzly.     Well maybe not quite that big   but the biggest I have ever caught.  Both were just pigs.  I had seen a lot of big coon earlier.    All the crops were harvested unlike last year and the coon were moving good.  I couldn't take a week off early as we had a big project at the farm to complete.
