Ponder why the various WSSM's came about - they were created to give the same performance as a longer cartridge in a shorter one, thereby allowing chambering in a commensurately-shorter action.

Then consider: Single shot rifles have no "short" or "long" actions, as they will accept ANY cartridge, regardless of length - with only the cartridge width limited by action size (among other things).

Soooo, there's zero advantage to short chambering a rifle, like a non-bolt action single shot, that's readily chamberable to the longer version.....especially when the longer version's been available longer & is most likely more popular/more marketable.

Well, yes to the weight, but i was thinking more about the speed. From what i've read, The 223 wssm is the fastest .22. Beating the 22-250 and the 220 swift by about 150 to 200 fps. The 243 wssm is also faster than the 243 win by about the same 150 fps. Maybe 150 fps won't matter much, I don't know, it was just a thought

Just some thoughts in my head.

The single shot will have a shorter over all rifle length.

Some shorter cases are much more efficient than longer cases.

Some of the WSSMs operate at ridiculously high chamber pressures.

A short action bolt gun can have a shorter over all length, if one feels that is important. (I never have.)

If your just after more velocity than a 243 you could try a 6mm rem. Same size case head as a regular 243 just a little longer and its about equal in velocity to the 243 wssm i think. Just a thought.

Its funny that with handguns we went longer for more performance but on rifles everyone wants to go shorter. Anything done with a short round the factory could do the same with the longer round performance wize but it wouldn't sell new guns

WSSM’s kind of dying off and really doesn’t amount to much anyway.

Look for a cartridge based off of 30-06 Springfield or 308 Winchester all are great and brass is cheaper.

Actually, there is a perceived advantage in the sense that a short, fat case / powder column is supposed to be a little more accurate then a long, thinner case design.  Most bench rest shooters subscribe to the short / fat case theory.  Don't know how much difference it really makes in a hunting grade rifle though.

I just measured the water capacity of the .223 wssm versus the .220 swift today.  both Win cases.  The wssm held 1.9 grs. more than the swift. This amounted to about 4%.  A few weeks ago i measured the .243wssm vs the .243 win.  I don't remember the exact amount but the .243 win. held more than the 243 wssm, meaning that at the same pressure the .243 win should beat the 243 wssm.
