New small soda cans.
« on: February 06, 2010, 09:12:35 PM »
Just an FYI - I got an 8 pack of 7.5oz cans of Coke today. They're 2.255" diameter, so should fit many cannons with a 'pool ball' bore.

A lot cheaper than the energy/coffee drinks that come in that diameter can...

Holy moly, Victor, long time no read! I was starting to get worried about ya, so I sent out a couple of Apache scouts the other day to see if they could locate you. I was relieved when they reported back to me that you were hanging out at the survivalist forum learning how to exist for months at a stretch in the woods on nothing more than wild berries and roots. Listen, I know that thinking about Barb Boxer losing has probably thrown you into a near panic, but just hang in there, there's no telling how things will turn out, you may not have to go hide in the forest after all. :D I'm glad you're back! :)
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Yes, I've been collecting them for a week and will fill them with fiber reinforced cement tomorrow. Be interesting to see how they hold up, tissue paper thin!

If they're as thin as some of the soda cans I've shot, the concrete goes while the aluminum opens up like a daisey!   :D

Tim,

I know you have reported this over the years and I have never had the problem. I wonder why.

I have no idea, just wonder why.

Tim,

I have no idea, just wonder why.

Perhaps because most of my mortars are of 4140, extremely overbuilt (powder chamber and superthick walls) and sometimes (perhaps often) fired for maximum (not reasonable) ranges with faster powder than what is often used?

Hmmm.  Maybe.  Does the slight bit of difference between the two golf-ball caliber mortars tell you something?

One of 4140, my design, the other from our 'we'll send you the steel and oak - you build a mortar contest'.

Thank's for your concern, Mr. J.

Yes, things have been rough lately but I'm still alive and drinking small cans of Coke.  :)

Victor, we are glad to see you're back.  Never drank those energy or canned coffee drinks, so we don't have a tube for that size, but we could certainly make a simple tube without too much trouble.  What do you think about doubling up on some projectiles for a howitzer length cannon in this caliber, a la 60's style, duplex-load for the M-14, 7.62mm??   ;D ;D

Danger, Will Robinson! DD alert! Way off topic!  ;D

Maybe he doesn't have his glasses on, so...

 Sounds neat. Go for it!

NOW I see it!  Looks like two affirmatives, we better log that idea on the list of things to try.  I think March will be a busy month in the shop And on the range!

Yes, things have been rough lately but I'm still alive and drinking small cans of Coke.  :)

Well, Vic, here's an anecdote about these new size pop cans that is meant to cheer you up a little. About two weeks ago my wife came home from grocery shopping, and pulled one of these 7.5 oz Sprite 8-packs out of the bag and put it on the kitchen counter saying; look at these new little cans they've come out with. I then asked her how much it had cost to which she responded she didn't know; I then told her that the store had a buy four 12-packs (12 oz. cans) for 9 bucks sale going on, and she said "yeah, but these are cute." Home Economics 101.

On a somewhat sad note I have to report that they don't fit.  I tried several varities and they just won't quite fit, empty or filled. This is in my 2.25 Parrott barrel, others may have better luck. If you do, I've got a bunch of cans!
