Garmin Etrex Summit HC?
« on: February 07, 2010, 02:32:13 AM »
I've decided to get modern and just purchased one of these and would appreciate all comments both pro and con about these units, please? I have limited experience with GPS units but, am willing to learn. I've recently been playing with a Magellan Triton that I purchased from a local Walmart store and have had so many problems(both software and machine) that have given up on that unit.

I have a Venture HC that's somewhat like the Summit HC. I have had great results with mine. Nothing really fancy but locks onto satellites fast and works under foliage. I had a Garmin 60c and it had weak reception and I'd lose satellite signal in the wood near my house. The Venture works great inthe same areas.

Looks like a nice one Steve!...Dont know anyone who owns one but my (search) reveled a 4.8 consumer rating out of 5.0 possible stars.

If I understood the reviews correctly, I think that the negative .2 just amounted to a gent saying that he learned more by operating the units options on his own rather than to follow the somewhat (Hokey) instruction manual. This guy loved the unit though.

Maybe I need to shake or drop my old unit a little to speed its demise?  ;) It works so well that I probably won't purchase new until it Quits.

Unfortunately the Garmin Manuals are not very good.  They are somewhat helpful but not good.  By using the unit and reading the manual things started coming together for me.  The FAG in Garmin support has proven helpful at times.

You don't even get a manual with Magellan Tritons? Have to download from internet.
