Just got my new in box Norinco 1911A1 government on friday and removed all the packing grease from it yesterday. This is my first hand gun ever and my first impression of it is good. The blueing looks pretty nice it came with a hard plastic case with molded foam liner to fit the gun, an extra magazine and included cleaning rod and brush and owners manual.

Since i live in Canada I have to jump through a few more hoops before i can shoot the gun but hopefully i will have a range report within the next month or so.

Anyone have recommendations for cheap factory loads to try for the first few hundred rounds until i start reloading for it?

I've had good luck with the Winchester white boxes for 230gr ball. I buy them in the 100 round box.

Congrats you just purchased one of the finest 1911a1's out there thats affordable and just an awesome 45acp pistol. When the chinese people at norinco copy something they do it better quality wise than we can. Trust me you will find that out when you fire it. You live in the north country were you can own a new norinco you lucky dog you. I been hoping that with the increase in trade with china by the usa borrowing $$ for the ongoing war maybe the chinese will ask the "USA" to open up the small arms trade again so we can get some norince 1911's and the polytech m14 again too.

I shoot the russian manufactured Wolf 45acp Ball ammo in all my 1911's. Its been accurate and a lot cleaner than it first was too. Plus its only 500rds for $159.00.

I bought a boat load of it when it was just $6.70 a box of 50rds. I'm glad i did. Now with the higher prices we only replace what we shoot. My problem is we shoot 500rds of 45acp at one trip to the range. Then we shoot 500rds of the other calibers too. It was affordable to shoot not too long ago but now we need to curb the excess shooting. But with 4 or 5 of us shooting thats hard to do. Plus i like hammering the newer guns to see if they fail. I hope the prices on new ammo get down to normal again.

Wells its nice to hear I made a good choice going with a Norinco, hopefully it will live up to what I have read about them. I guess they might be the only advantage we Canadians have when it comes to anything to do with firearms,

I think both the winchester whitebox and wolf brands are available in my local gun shops so once I have the legal requirements taken care of so I can shoot this thing at the range i will try some of those to break it in. From the research I've done so far it appears these 1911's were originally designed to digest 230 grain round nose bullets so i will probably just stick with those to get started.

From what I gather Canada has a lot of wide open spaces. Suppose one would drive off to the far reaches and unload a hundred rounds or so...who would be the wiser?

Then sombody could give us a range report..eh?

Adam: good for you. As for ammo - might as well get new reloadable stuff because you will want to start reloading as soon as possible; go for plain 230 gn mil-spec (check one of our sponsors, MidSouth Supply) and the other major distributors and have fun, and let us know.

Oh yeah, you'll want a few extra magazines because once you start shooting it you won't want to have to stop to reload after just two mags.....just a thought.

Your definitely right about plenty of wide open spaces in Canada, I wouldn't think any other country on the planet compares to us in that department, we have slightly more land mass then the united states with only 35 million people in the country. With that being said the specific part that I live in is one of the most populated areas in all of north america ( southern ontario/Toronto area ) based off its size, so with my luck if I went out to some wooded area and blasted off that many rounds I would have plenty of explaning to do to the local police department forsure.

But as long as it manages to cycle ammo reliably thats all i really care about at this point , I can always upgrade parts of the gun if needed for better accuracy/appearance etc. Thats why i decided to go with a 1911 there's just so many options to personalize them, their like the remington 870 of the hand gun world.

Mikey I've got 2 mags for it right now and will probably pick up 2 more soon, If i ever decide to get into competition shooting I'm sure I will need to buy alot more then.

Anyone have a ball park of what i should expect from this gun accuracy wise at 25 yards from what i have read most stock 1911's are in the 2" group size at that distance.

It has been a long time since I was there but unless things have gone to hell I think you will find them very helpful.

the club that i belong to has a hand gun range but before i can bring my gun there to shoot it , I need to take a course at the club on safe handling on a hand gun because we all know that the same principals that apply to other guns for firearm safety are so much different with a hand gun

That being said it looks like the next course which i believe are 1 day long runs in april which actually works out ok for me because im moving to a new house at the end of March so things are crazy trying to get that stuff looked after right now anyway.

But once i complete the course for my ATT I will be able to take my gun to any gun club in Ontario

Range update.

Finally got through all of the required paperwork to take my new Norinco to the range. I went last saturday and will probably go agin tomorrow if weather holds out. I just shot at the 50 yard berm because i was over on the longer range side of the range because my main venture last week was to get some more rounds down the tube at 200 yards with my .270 handi.

Anyway back on topic. This gun performed 100% flawlessy, with some of what i read about 1911 functioning problems i was a bit concerned. All i did was a complete strip down cleaning and light oiling and this thing fired as fast as i could pull the trigger. Only had one box of 50 rounds with me, i loaded one magazine after another until i ran out of ammo. What a blast--couldn't be happier with gun and can't wait to get back out tomorrow.

Hope to try it for groups at about 25 yards free hand tomorrow. Last week at 50 yards i could easily hit the target every time shooting one-handed so accuracy is more then adaquate for what this is intended for. I ran into another guy there who owns the same gun and he said he has several 1000's of rounds through his in IPSC competition with many different bullet types and has yet to get a jam.

These norinco's appear to just plain work

A 1911 can be as additive as a Handi Rifle 45 70. I bought one (Taurus) last June and I have shot (with the wife & Kids help) over 2,000 rounds through it already. 45 ACP is an easy round to reload, much easier than the bottleneck 270 you are working on. Best thing about this gun is there are tons of aftermarket stuff for it and so much written about how to load for it that a little internet time and you can become quite knowledge on the gun. Hi BB,

As you know i am new to reloading but i have been keeping my brass from the .45, when i can find them that is. They were being fired about 15 feet away or up into the covered shooting canopy and they would just rattle themselves out of sight somewhere. Don't know if i will bother reloading this caliber i don't plan to shoot it near as much as my rifles but it won't hurt to start stock pilling brass just in case i decide to.

Adam,

My rule of thumb on a 45 ACP 1911 is the brass should land from about 4 to 8 feet away. Less than that you will start getting jams and more than that distance the gun is getting pounded. Easy to adjust by replacing the recoil spring or changing the ammo. Wolff Springs sell spring packs for the 1911 so you find the right weight spring for your ammo. Note, if you decide to shoot heavy loads and increase your recoil spring rating you also need to replace your firing pin spring with a heavier spring. This is to prevent bump fires.

At this point i just plan to keep this one stock. If i shoot a few hundred rounds a year through it that will probably be just about it. Its a blast to shoot but rifles are my obsession.

In new stock form the norc has to be awesome. I will never pass one up if i see one cheap again. These have to be one of the best 1911 buys out there.

Since you have imports of the norinco stuff in the north country can you get the norinco ammo in 45acp too?? I heard its also awesome accurate ammo too.

I picked up a well used norinco thats looser than crap thru a goose. Even the barrel bushing was floating in the slide it was that loose. I added a new barrel, a national match barrel bushing, a full length guide rod and a 18# recoil spring for now. Even with the loose slide to frame fit its shooting clover leafs.

I have never seen any Norinco ammo but if the quality is anything like their firearms i would bet it would be better then most of the standard brands. All i see around here for factory loads . 45 auto are wolf, American Eagle and i might misspell the last type Privi-partizan or something like that. So far the amercian eagle brand has worked awesome in this gun, only downside , just gets fairly expensive shooting them due to how much ammo you can burn through with one of these in a very short amount of time.

The Norinco ammo is good stuff, not sure if it is still being produced. I find it occassionally at gun shows or over priced on the auction sites. When I dumped my AK and SKS a while back had no trouble selling the 7.62 39 Norinco ammo.
