Help date this Browning auto please
« on: February 07, 2010, 07:40:18 AM »
I have a Browning shotgun which I believe to be an A5 standard 16 gauge.  I went to browning's site trying to date this gun but I can't make heads or tails of the serial numbers they list.  My gun's # is stamped between the forearm and loading port.  It is 2 lines, the top line is 4R, and under that is 23704.  Any help is appreciated!  I can take pics if needed.

Rod, According to Matt Eastmans book the 4R in the serial # indicates that it is a standard grade built in 1964.

FWIW, that shotgun had to be one of the last 16ga A-5 standard's produced, since they were discontinued in 1964.

RANGR44,  I'm going from Eastmans book and only assuming he has his facts right , because I'm no authority on anything. He claims the standard weight was made from 1909-1968, and the Sweet 16 from 1953-1976.
