Got my first coyote last nite---
« on: February 08, 2010, 05:57:03 AM »
Well my friend John and me have been out calling several times with no luck. Then last weekend we called in three at one time and John shot one, I missed mine and the other ran off. We went back out Sunday morning and hiked thru the snow and cold trying three setups without any luck.
Got home and did the family thing before settling in to watch the superbowl. My neighbor calls me and says "hey, there's coyote walking across the front yard and heading up the hill" . So I went in and got my .223 H&R out of the safe and snuck out the back door. I worked my way up along my driveway about 30 yards to a pear tree that I kept between me and the coyote so I could get a rest. Little did the coyote know but he was in my shooting range( I set up in the same spot to sight in my rifles) except he was higher up the hill. I knew where the 150 yard mark was and he was probably 25 yards farther up so I dialed my scope to 175, centered the crosshairs and pulled the trigger. The shot felt good but he ran around the hillside out of sight. I went back in and took off my slippers, grabbed a flashlight and coat slippped on my boots and went looking. I found her on the backside of the hill with a perfectly centered hole in her right side. She had ran about 50 yards. Man I love that little Handi rifle. Sorry no pics as it was dark by the time I got back to the house.

I am shooting an H&R .223 Handi bull in stainless using Remington UMC 50 gr JHP. This gun shoots these and v-max's excellent but these are cheaper and just as accurate. The bullet or part of it went thru but the exit hole wasn't that big so it may have been a fragment. I was getting ready to skin her out but her back has about a 4" circle where the hair is gone-might be from mating.
It amazes me how tough these things are as she ran at least 50 yards leaving a pretty good blood trail.
Here is the pic but it is from tonight after work.

Thank you for sharing, now you be careful. You are dealing with 2 very adictive substances, Handi Rifles and Coyotes. Both can cost you alot of money.

That ain't nothing! When you can do that with the Ruger 44 Carbine, I'll be impressed. LOL  ;D Just kidding!

Good shooting! Glad to see someone is connecting with them, sure ain't me.....

Thanks, Dinny

If you think this is a costly hobby you should try airguns. I was into them pretty heavy for a few years but have cut back a little on them. Plus a few years ago I built that 68 Impala in my avatar from the ground up. Now That was expensive!! I think I have too many hobby's or at least my wife thinks I do.
