M252 81mm (3") BP mortar - build questions
« on: February 08, 2010, 10:41:54 AM »
Hello,

I'm looking for ANY info regarding a 81mm (m252) type mortar for BP use.  I guess my biggest question is where to get a piece of tubing the will have a 3" ID and the OD to fit the m252 bipod.  I've found a BP mortar cup online (Ordnance Research - see link) and figure all I need to do is get the tube and have it either machined or welded???

Anyone else have a 81mm or 60mm mortar out there?  If so, please post any pics or ideas you may have.

Thanks in advance,
PBR

To build such a mortar you need to acquire a permit from ATF first stating that you are allowed to build such a mortar.  The mortar you described is a replica of a Stokes Mortar made in 1914 which is considered a Destructive device and is not considered an antique as it does not replicate a mortar made before 1898.

Also before posting on the Black Powder Mortar and Cannon board you need to read the rules for the forum.  The rules for BPM&C do not allow disccussion of Stokes mortar.

Your posting has being moved to the exotic weapons forum.

Actually you can build the 81mm in black powder form. However you must make the bore small enough that a mortar round will not fit app 77 mm is 3 inches. You must also weld the basecup in place so that it cannot screw off. If you follow these two its a go. There was a company that was building them for a while.  contact bill at www.bigshotsofidaho.com. he can help ya with it.....

Better get that in writing from ATF before you believe it.

Give Aircraft Spruce an email asking about exactly what you want, e.g., 3" ID, 1/4" wall, 4130 seamless tubing.

They're not the cheapest place but will ship small orders.

That's how I understand it as well - as long as the ID is smaller (ie 77mm vs 81mm), welded cup with no firing pin...its considererd muzzel loader.  Basically, its the same thing as 37 grenade luauncher vs the real-deal DD 40mm grenade launcher.

Being new to this forum, I hope this is the correct place to post regarding to what I beleive to be a BP question.  With 19 tax stamps and counting, I have a fair amount of knowledge regarding NFA (DD's, MG's, AOL's, etc..).

Thanks for all of the posts and info!

I e-mailed him and he doesn't have one...bummer.  I'll check with a few other suppliers or have one built.

Currently, I don't have a bipod or base plate - I noticed ima sells them but at a steep price IMO.  I'm not in a major hurry to get all, but I would like to go the barrel/tube so I can pick up parts as needed.

Thanks,
PBR

the 81mm that are sold by www.ima-usa.com are WW2.  the 60mm that I had with a black powder tube and a register base cup sold for 2500.00 I did have a registered base cup for the 81 (WW2 firestone) and it went for 1100.00 The basecups that are 80% are well worth the money in my opinion. I do have a subcaliber training kit that I have been saving (complete) I would let that go for 2800.00

I am currently working on a trainer only tube design, and am awaiting an ATF ruling on the design as either a title one or non-firearm, instead of a DD.

BTW I didnt know that you needed a NFA stamp for AOL ;D just kidding.....

LOL...took me a minute to figure out what you were talking about (aol vs aow).  My typing is equally as bad as my spelling.
