Heavy Rust
« on: February 08, 2010, 01:23:38 PM »
How can I remove serious rust build up from the inside of a shotgun magazine tube.  It is an Ithaca 37.  I had to drive the spring and spring cap out after soaking with Gum-out for quite some time.  I have purchased new parts but I need to clean the magazine first.    Word to the wise; do not use an untreated wood plug in your magazine.  It must have gotten wet and it sat in there and rusted everything.  Do not remember that gun getting any unusual moisture, but I sure have a mess now.
Thanks for any suggestions.

My first choice would be to buy & install a new mag tube from the likes of Numrich Arms.

My next choice would be to buy a small automotive wheel/brake cylinder hone at an auto parts house, and run it through there with a long extension on an electric hand drill - after first plugging one end, filling the tube with penetrating oil, and letting it soak for a day or two..

I would go with some scotch bright pad wrapped on a shotgun brush, run it with an electric drill and use some bore cleaner on it.  Larry

A shotgun brush or wooden dowel in a drill and loaded with steel wool(00) will remove the rust easily. If using the dowel a slot will hold the wool and allow spinning it into a ball wrapped around the end. Spinning it in the magazine tube with a squirt of oil, WD40 will work, will loosen the rust. Wipe it out and repeat a couple of times.. For some reason I've seen a lot of rust in Ithacas M37 both in the mag tubes and the chambers/bores.. Don't know why but it certainly gets curious.. below is a link to a parts diagram..
