barrel vise question.
« on: February 09, 2010, 10:15:09 AM »
I just made a barrel vise from 1" by 2" steel and plan to use wood block for grip. My question is what wood is best to use? I see one sold on ebay uses oak. I wonder if harder wood has better grip or softer. Does pine have too much sap in fibers therefore causing intrinsic lubricating. I have not attempted to remove barrel before and am starting on an 03-a3. Saw recomendation to drill blocks with hole as close to size of barrel as possible with opening left between blocks to prevent twoblocking from lessing grip on barrel.
Thanks for insight. Don.

Oak is better than pine - be sure to coat the wood with rosin.

What R U planning on using as an action wrench ?

I got 1" round for handle and couple of 1 x 2 plates to build one. I was first going to use one plate welded to round for flat side of clamp and v or round cut other for other side of clamp. Now am thinking of flatening one end of side of round for a few inches for flat side and have bolts come through the round and other side of clamp.
where do I get this rosin and is it really needed?
Thanks Don.

Oak is the ticket, clamp two pieces together and then bore a hole in the middle just slightly smaller than the diameter of the barrel.  Then take them apart and sand off about 1/16 inch from each side so you can clamp them together and grip the barrel.  Rosin is tree sap, used in lots of things, baseball and bars of it for getting a grip on things.  You do need it.  Larry

I don't know what action/barrel you're wanting to wrench on, but since many an action body has been twisted out of spec (permanently) by the use of an improper action wrench (usually what someone "thought" would work"), you might want to inquire of a professional supply house ( like Brownell's or other) as to the availability of an action wrench specific to the rifle you're working on.

Most of the action wrenches I've seen/used operate via being made to fit solidly inside the action, and the action then turned off the barrel while it was held in the vise.

I use sycamore for the wood blocks and like them better than oak. They seem to resist splitting better than any oak and are tough as mails. They still require resin of course. Action wrenches should only attach to the action by the front receiver ring. Either internally via the locking lug recesses or externally via the front ring. I prefer the externally fitting wrenches as they are easier to make and a bit stronger.. Good luck.

Thanks Don.

WallyWorld ? ?    ::)

If you don't have a real team-sports type sporting goods store nearby, Midway carries 1/2lb bags of powdered rosin - just what the doctor ordered:

Ok, the closest we have to that here is a Big 5. I looked there and they don't carry either. I did goto a music store to see if they had any. They normaly carry, but won't have any till next week. They say the darker bar rosin is more sticky than the light. Is the bar rosin also usable for the wood blocks? I am not sure if bar or powder makes a difference. If not I'll just have to order from above source.
Thanks Don.

If you are planning to yank the barrel off of an old military mauser, you have to have a perfect wrench and know what you are doing.   These actions will "twist" pretty easily due to the soft steel, which will ruin the action.

The action wrench I used was very complex - flat on the action flat/recoil lug side, v-shaped on the round ring side. Righty-tighty, lefty loosey :o Properly fitting the replacement barrel is where the challenges may come and skill will be required. I will say that they were put on snug!

I am using all 1" material to build the wrench and grade 8 bolts. I think it will hold. Does anyone know if the bar rosin will work on the wood blocks? Or will I need to order the powder?
Thanks Don.
