Bore and groove for 375 and 38-55
« on: February 09, 2010, 04:55:18 PM »
Just got an older Contender Carbine and am interested in getting a 375 Win or 38-55 barrel for it.  Went back thru 90 pages here and couldn't find any reference to the bore size of these 2 barrels.  I have 2-38-55's that have larger bores and they shoot well with larger cast bullets, but would like a barrel that will shoot the .375 Sierra or Hornady bullets.  Any one know what the 375 Win. and the 38-55 barrels measure out to be?  I called TC, but C/S didn't have any idea and put me thru to Tech, but had to leave a message and haven't gotten an answer.  I don't think I'm intrested in the 375 JDJ.  Any help would be welcome.  I had one of these over 15 years ago and just ran across this one Sunday, very crisp, light trigger.  Some one really did a lousy job refinishing the wood, will have to strip it and redo.  Thanks, DP

I know for a fact that the 375's are .375" and am pretty sure the 38-55's are too.  TC has never, to my knowledge, used but one size barrel in a specific caliber range.  I have an Encore 375Win and a Contender 375W.  Both are tack drivers with .375 bullets.

I wasn't sure, they list different twist rates for the 38-55 and the 375 Win. in the Midway catalog, but the TC site has the same twist.  :-\ Anyone else have either of these and want to give some advice?  Thanks for your answer Hopalong7.  If the 38-55 is the same, I would like to just use the brass I already have.  Is the chamber cut to allow the longer length of the 38-55 brass in the 375 chamber?  DP

I don't know about the chamber...but, I doubt it.  The 375 in the Contender has a history of being very accurate...so I'd think the chamber and throat is just right for the 375 only.  Give the custom Shop a call...they should be able to tell you.  They can also make you a 38-55. ;)

As stated, the goove diameter of the .375 is .375. The groove diameter of a correct .38-55 is .379. I ordered a Bullberry rifle bbl in .38-55 and had to specify a .375 GD so I could use the more available projectiles.  Call Ed's Contenders at 405-879-0879. Ed is very much up on these things, might even have your bbl in stock.

Thanks FredWT, I just e-mailed Ed and hope to hear from him soon, he has both barrels listed on his site for sale.  If I don't hear from him soon I will give him a call.  Thanks for the phone number.  DP
