Here is another possible cause: Stainless steel and extreme cold (winter in Manitoba: -20 C ?) don't make a good combination.

When you load a muzzleloader you are making a pipe bomb, there are many things thay can go wrong...I wouldn't assume that the muzzleloader is at fault, I've seen plenty of people that could wreck an anvil..

Yep. I am not assuming that the rifle or the design is faulty.
I almost shot two bullets on top of 100 grains of 777, i almost shot a bullets that was not seated on top of the powder (it was about 3-4" away, seated on the "crud ring"), and i almost handloaded a 7.62x54R round with double charge of powder.

I have a mark on the ram rod so I know if I've either forgotten to add powder, or I haven't really hit bottom. And after seeing that photo I'm going to be real sure I check it each time.

I love the Savage but smokeless isn't as forgiving as black powder or it's subs.

I have wondered how long it would take for this to happen. Unless someone followed Savage's load advice explicitly it would be way too easy to do this. After playing with Quickload and seeing how some smokeless powder spikes pressures when the projo is seated to touch it I can see why no other manufacturer recommends smokeless powder in their muzzle loaders. The article doesn't mention what powder he was using, or how much. The comment on 416 stainless steel in cold temps is right on as well. John Kreiger has a lot to say about that subject, and warns people not to use stainless barrels in low temps. It would be interesting to get the full story here at some point.

One thing that escapes me is WHY anyone would want to use smokeless in a muzzle loader? I'll admit I'm don't keep up on all the new stuff, but that seems a bit weird.

You don't have to clean them.

One more reason to get rid of inlines.
Even stupid folk cant blow themselves up with a traditional rifle and black powder.

If your so lazy you don't want to clean your firearm, you should not be shooting

There's little reason to clean modern firearms.  In fact it just wears them out.

Obviously someone has guns that are a lot harder to clean then mine are, if they have to use smokeless in them?

They are designed to shoot smokeless powder so this gives them more velocity and they don't leave the residue that real black powder does...

They are able to get 2200fps with a 300gr bullet, which makes them a legit 250  yard gun...

Nope, I don't own one and you can probably tell by my handle that I prefer flintlocks...The guy that designed the Savage lives about 30 miles away in Greensboro, NC...He posts on one of our NC forums...It's an interesting design and used properly should give no problems...Some folks just aren't smart enough to be safe with most any endeavor...

Does anyone really know what happened?

Not having to clean a firearm is not a reason for me to buy it, cleaning is all part of the sport.  Anyway black powder firearms are not hard to clean they just need some special treatment.  The true black powder substitutes are very easy to clean, but still need to be cleaned after every use.

If the factory gets it back they can test it or have it tested . Remington had 17 cal. bbls mess up and other companies have also . We all know er are doing something dangerous in shooting .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I can't say I agree with that. Shooting isn't be the least bit dangerous, if its done with proper equipment and knowledge. But of course that goes for skiing, golf, or fishing for that matter.

never owned one never will but have wondered why if you shoot smokless powder in a muzzler why it has to have a bullet set down tite. you shoot smokless in other guns with lots of air space.

That's right!  If a matchlock was good enough for my great, great, etc. grandfather, it's good enough for me!

All seriousness aside, we need to see stuff like this every now and then to remind us how close we are to a disaster when we shoot.  20 ga. in a 12, overcharging with fast burning pistol powder, not seating bullets against the powder, obstructions in the barrel, wrong loading data, wrong cartridge in the chamber, any of these things can happen if we lose our focus when we are reloading or shooting  And then there is the stupid factor.  And don't tell me that it can't happen to you!

I have been shooting my Savage for 6 years. What a great rifle!

There are many thousands of Savages out there. This is the second barrel blow up that I know of.
The other one is real fishy, I believe the guy did it on purpose.

If you look around enough you will see stories about a blow up of any gun.
There are pics going around where a Smith and Wesson .44 mag blew up.
I saw a story a few years ago where a beautiful Tikka rifle from Finland blew up.

Who knows what went wrong with this Savage? I hope the truth is revealed.
Aim small don't miss.

If you look at the location of the burst, it is obvious there was either a double charge or the bullet was not seated.  It is way too far forward.  Either the shooter has no idea what happened, or will not admit what a mistake he made.  Either way, I doubt it had anything to do with the gun.

Thats why some folks should always shoot bullets. Ya cant be a scarecrow and muzzle load
