red dot mount problem...
« on: February 10, 2010, 11:17:10 AM »
I have a Ruger Super Redhawk in 44mag. scope.  I decided to mount a red dot instead of a scope. The scope I chose did not fit into my ruger rings so I purchased a B_Square mount specifically for the super redhawk.  Took it out today.  The mount system made it three shots til the rail was about to fall off the gun.  I went into the shop, took off the B-Square mounting rail and reinstalled it and went as tight as I could go.  Two shots later it was loose again.  I really paid attention to the mounting screws...I could barely get them off they were still tight!

Anybody ever hear of this?  What should I do?  Need a kind of quick fix, I have a hog hunt in TX at the end of the month.  I really like the red dot and the field of view it gives me, I hope that is not the problem.  This is the red dot I have.

I had the same problem with a Taurus .454 bull gun. I used Loc Tite and it still moved. Two red dots later I removed the rail. Got a deer with the iron sights.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

I've heard that rail is junk.  The weiland rail gets good reviews.

Recommend Weigands ~ The one for the SRH 454 not the 44. Few bucks more but worth it as it held for me on mine. I've not seen one good report on the Bē. Suppose there could be a lot of satified user out there still.

So what's the problem with using the Ruger rings?

So what's the problem with using the Ruger rings?

Typically what we face is the spacing of the rings (usually too close together for our choice of optic) and/or diameter available. He chose a 50mm unit using an integrated weaver style method of mounting. Ruger itself makes its rings available in 1" and 30mm. To complicate it more, 30mm rings are made available in heights commensurate w/scoping a rifle w/an >50mm objective lense and that is not necessarily desireable on a pistol. Short ans is Ruger rings are good ~ but not tuned for their best on handguns when one moves larger than 1" application.

well personally i've never had any luck with any B-square product. I had the full lengh weaver rail on a SRH in 454 I mounted a burris 1.5-4 on it. got to 18 rounds and the rear screw broke and the whole rail snapped up broke the first bolt holding the front and bend the other. After that I traded the SRH in on a 500smith and since then I've just shot everything with open sights since as far as handguns go. I know warne makes a mount for the 500smith and I think they also make a weaver rail that just mounts to the already scope mounts on the ruger. I'd check them out.

Recently I saw somewhere (brainfart right now) selling a mount that fit the Ruger mount converting it to a Weaver. It just filled the Ruger mount with a Weaver Slot. Try and Google that and maybe it will come up.  If I see it again I will post it here. IMHO, B-Square does not put out a good product. I had one for my HK91 that was very bulky, looked tacky. With a little searching I found a Weaver rail mount for it that laid flat along the receiver like it was made into it and it lets several Red Dots co-witness with the iron sights.

?? an ruger-to-weaver adaptive mount would be using a clinch screw w/nut like ruger mounts do and length, unless too short, would not have been an issue right?
