My idea is a suppressed G2 or Encore.  Of course the bullet would have to stay subsonic.  Target would be 75 yards or less.  Would have to be really accurate.  Would be shot from a rest not off-hand.  Would need to be able penetrate well.  I was thinking of JD Jones .338 Whisper but then thought about maybe just a .44 Mag with heavy bullets loaded down to 1000fps or so.  Would be used almost exclusively for neck/head shots on feeding pigs at night.  Legal in my area...

Any other ideas or recommendations?

For your purpose, I'd go with one of JD's Whisper cartridges.  In my experience, 100 yard shots with reduced 44 Magnum loads probably isn't going to give you stellar accuracy.

I have loaded both my 30-30 and 375 Winchester down to subsonic loads.  The most accurate seems to be the 375 Win. with greasy 265gr lead bullets with about 1.5 grains of Bullseye.  Sounds like a big air rifle when it goes off, and that's without a suppressor!  That's really only a good load out to about 30 yards, after that the big bullet drops really fast.  In colder weather, I might use a little more Bullseye to compensate for the cold air.

You might consider the 300 Whisper, it's tried and true for what you're thinking about doing.  Good balistics, good bullet weight, and was designed for suppressed shooting.  Lots of information about subsonic loads for it.

I'd thought about the .300 Whisper but wanted to step up in bullet weight a bit that's why I looked at the .338 Whisper.  I'm not worried about 100 yd shots.  75 would be really long at most of our stands for pigs at night.  50 would be just about the normal shot.  If I could get it to about 1"-1.5" at that range with a scope I'd be quite satisfied.  Maybe even a .44special with long bullets in a custom cut chamber...  Just a thought for now but it is always good to have a plan for the future.  Maybe I should just order the Whisper barrel and suppressor from JD and be done with it.

I always thought it would be cool to try one of the larger caliber whispers. I say go for the 338 and see how it works.

I have a Thompson Custom Shot 300 whisper.  I do not have a suppressor.  The 220 gr Sierrra Matchkings loaded down to subsonic 1050 fps should do you fine.  I can guarantee you will thread a needle at 50-100 yards.  With out a silencer/supressor that round makes about as much noise as a 22 CB cap.  The only thing is the bullet will not expand because the velocity is low.  For hunting you are forced to take head shots for a quick kill.

  The Norma 150 gr Ballistic Tips I also deer hunt with leave the gun at 2200 fps and make about the same amount of noise as a 22 LR.  Since its a 2200 fps round, I get excellent bullet expansion.  Deer shot in the heart or lungs fall over dead or run at most 100 yards.(extremely high double lung shot).

If you have a .44 mag. barrel around there is no reason it would not work. We used to shoot alot of tin cans at 60 to 80 yrds. with 240 gr. bullets running abt. 950 fps. from my SBK. They were loaded with 6 grs. of Bullseye and we killed alot of cans offhanded with this load. For hogs you may want to go to a 300 gr. bullet for better penitration, but the .44 mag. with Bullseye powder and a heavy bullet will server you well.
