Tracker in 22mag or 17hmr accuracy
« on: February 11, 2010, 05:02:28 AM »
I am new to handgun hunting, I own a Smith 657-6 hunter model in 41mag with unflutted cylinder and hunted with it this year taking a doe at 20yds with one shot to the base of the neck, she droped. Bullet was speer gold dot 210gr.  I was thinking of getting into small game huntig with a handgun and was considering a Taurus Tracker in 22mag or 17hmr. what kind of accuracy can be expected with either of these in 6 1/2 or 8in barrels. I have a 3x scope that I would be putting on it. Thanks for an imput you can give.                                                                  jh41mag

My wife has a Taurus 17HMR revolver. 3 of the 8 cylinders shoot well, the other 5 blow out the brass and scatter the bullets all over the place. Sent it back to Taurus with samples of the blown out brass and they sent it back 8 weeks later saying that it is normal, Huh?

The cylinder is not drilled properly.

Too bad that Taurus doesn't care about their quality.

I have read others saying the 17 has good accuracy but have my eye on the 22 mag myself.

I have a 991 with 6" barrel, with winchester supreme ammo it will shoot 2" groups and under at 50 yards. I can hit turtles sunning on a log at over 100 yards most of the time.

I don't know anything about the 17, but I read on gunblast that he tested one that shot 1" groups at 100 yards.

Gene - shooting turtles is illegal - shooting over water is illegal! leave the turtles alone! See a shrink!

I believe that would depend on what part of the country you live in and the species of turtle.  In many areas, they are a nuisance and can take over a farm pond.

I would like to hear more about the 17hmr revolver.  I am considering one of these two my self for small game hunting.  I think for my purposes a 1.5 in group at 50 yrs would do but a 1 in group would be outstanding.

If you want a taurus 17hmr I would be glad to sell you mine for 200 dollars. It is new with less than 50 rounds through it. Please read my post about Taurus 17 revolvers before you jump

I read your post, Taurus has quality control issues that is for sure.  But have read were others shoot well so would be taking a chance but that goes for the 22 mag as well.

I've put at least 1,000 rounds of .17 hmr of all brands throught my Taurus Tracker and not had a single malfunction. Pull a boresnake through the barrel and cylinders and it comes up cleaner then a whistle. Took it on a turkey hunt and this jackrabbit jumped up and ran 50 yards stopped broadside. Shot went in the left side and internals went out the chest. See pic below.

Rigged it up with a reddot for a close range prairie dog shooter.

just got a 991 in 6.5".  Shoots great with all ammo.  Had a 4" 991 that would not shoot anything well.

Where do you find a 17hmr? I have an Uncle that has been looking for one for nearly 2yrs. He's checked with several distributers and they don't have any and some say that they have never had one. He put one on his wish list at Guns America several months ago and still nothing. Taurus says they are available, but where. He's also looking for a 5MM Tracker.
