New-to-me 10-gauge beast
« on: February 11, 2010, 06:31:01 AM »
Just picked up this unusual Model 176 from a friend. The barrel has been shortened and threaded for a very stoutly built compensating device that must weight three pounds all by itself.
Here's the big fella:

And here is the compensator:

I went to the FAQs to attempt to determine whether this is an SB1 or SB2 frame, and my conclusion is SB2, based on the smaller firing pin hole and the machined receiver floor:

Serial number starts with AT.
Do the experts here concur that it is an SB2?
Thanks.

The M176 was made 1975-1986 by H&R Inc, there was no SB1 or SB2 then, not until H&R1871 started making firearms in 1987. The compensator doesn't even have to be functionally effective, the weight alone will reduce recoil!!  ;D

Hi Tim: Does that mean this should be considered a shotgun-strength frame? That naughty Ed Hubel has me thinking wild and crazy things about the possibilities here, but frankly I think 250 grains of FFg under a .75 round ball would be plenty of fun .... :D

Bill,

Only thing I can said is "NICE"! I like the camo, interested in the paint if you know oh did it and what they used and it looks like it has lasted?

Enjoy touching off that 250gr of FFG. Have someone take picturs so we can see the white smoke! ;D

Yes, it's a case hardened cast iron frame as opposed to a heat treated investment cast alloy steel frame used in the SB2 shotgun frame that Ed works with, I don't know if he's worked with any older H&Rs tho.

That info should go in FAQs, Tim. But I bet you're way ahead of me on that score.  ;)

I think the link has been in the FAQs for quite a while, I'll have to check.  ;)
