No Cleavage Allowed
« on: February 11, 2010, 08:09:10 AM »
This is a true story from Florida. I have a close relative that retired from the State Attorneys office. One of his duties was to read all the shooting reports everyday and send a compilation to the Governor. One report came in about a husband that was in the process of teaching his new wife how to shoot a handgun. It was a warm summer day and she wore a scoop neck tee shirt. After her third shot with a semi auto 9mm the hot casing ejected and fell down the front of her tee shirt. While still holding the pistol in her right hand and jumping around trying to remove the casing with her left hand she accidently shot her husband in the foot. She got a blister and he got a trip to the hospital but both survived. So don't be surprised if you see a sign at some gun clubs in FL that simply say No Cleavage. Now you know the rest of the story.

I'm a Range Safety Officer. That is a very real concern.
At our range we are encouraged to compliment women who dress appropriately for the range...buttoned up, or high top t-shirts.

That's surprisingly common. I've had brass go down the neck of my t-shirt, into my pants pockets, into my shoes, into my shirt pocket. It's amazing where those things will end up and yes, I think it is important for those of us who shoot regularly to advise on proper clothing for a trip to the range.

Carrying a wind breaker is not a bad idea.

At an IMHSA match years ago we were shooting big bore and 22 at the same time . I was sighting for a friend and the guy next to us was shooting a Ruger auto with a 10 inch bbl . His "healthy " daughter was sighting for him . About half way thru. the match during a string of fire she jumps up and tears her low cut shirt off then her bra . seems a case went on in and when she jumped up went deeper . Needless to say the string had to be shot over . I really miss those days

See it quite frequently at the range during the summer.  Seen many women, and not all young ones, pulling their Tops and Bras down to get to hot case.

When I got my first Mini-14, I was at the range and sent a hot case down my wife's boss's coller three tables down, he really did some dancing.

I guess I'm thick skinned or something. I've had brass go down the back of my shirt, get trapped against my skin by the frame of my glasses, even had one get stuck on top of my ear.  But I always manage to get the gun set down safely.

And my wife is, um, abundant, and has had brass in her bosom, and same thing - gets it set down safely.  I guess it is a matter of priority.  Or, since we expect it, it isn't a big surprise.

That said, proper clothing is a must.  Long sleeves, at least buttoned up to the collar button,  and a hat.

I saw one guy was going to shoot his revolver from a reclined position, almost the old reclined Creedmore position.  Well, he was wearing shorts. The gap was right next to his bare leg.  Before anyone could stop him he popped one off.  Nasty, nasty burn.

Ouch! From 22 auto's only. All else are revolvers - no problem BUT, as stated, I do miss the good old days at IHMSA matches where anything was possible. and did happen!

Related to this, I was at the range one day and the guy next to me was shooting a 45 ACP, with Remington factory ammo. Almost every single one of those cases landed in  my shooting box. This was great for me because they're my favorite brand of 45 brass for reloading. Kept 'em all. He didn't want them.

I know how "hot" those shell casings are.............from experience.  Seems like everytime I go to the range I`m next to some gun firing some sort of semi that ejects almost level.  >:(

Maybe it would be a good idea to have a pitcher of water handy.  A wet t-shirt can be quite revealing, but other than that, it is the quickest way to alleviate the burning.

one of the guys at our camp brought his girlfriend up during a work weekend in July.   It was very hot and after our work was done we set up our target range and had some practice with muzzleloaders.    His girlfriend was as buxom as they get and scantily clad in Daisy Dukes and a tube top.    She was watching him touch off his flintlock ...3 feet to the right side.... sure enough when the flashpan sparked up it showered some tiny embers right in the chasm of her bosom.....she had that tube top off and was swatting at her chest before anyone could say anything.    She noticed what she'd done after a few seconds and  got real mad that we were watching, then my friend was in the doghouse because he didn't warn her to stand clear.    That was a time at the range I will never forget.

I have also seen signs at indoor ranges that require no open toe shoes and if you are wearing shorts you have to wear socks.  They sold cheap ones at the range.  As they had hot brass fall in open hi top sneakers, and sandles causing people to dance around with loaded gun.
The socks help.

No - we must protect it.   I think every gunrange should offer clear plastic wrap for any cleavage that finds its way to the shooting bench....protected yet visible as it was brought forth.......
