750
« on: February 11, 2010, 08:17:16 AM »
I want to get a 35 Whelen and I would like to know the general opinion about the reliability of a Remington 750. I afraid of it jamming.

I've posted on this thread and a few others.  I have the exact gun and my buddy has one as well.  I bought the gun a few weeks ago and have fired 60 rounds through it in the last 3 weeks and will shoot another 20 tomorrow and it hasn't jammed, not once.  I'm breaking it in using 60gr BL-C(3) and 200gr hornady bullets loaded to the cannelure.  The accuracy is acceptable at 100yards....2" groups...but again...this is a break-in load with a powder that I'm trying to get rid of.  I'll work up to a 250gr Hornady RN / RL-15 which is my plan for the gun.  The trigger is very heavy and I'll have that remedied after I shoot 200 rounds.  I have removed the sights and have mounted a Leupold 2x7 Vari-X II scope, ideal I think.  I'm not planning any other changes.  BTW...I'm loading 30/06 brass (R-P) that's been necked up to .33 and then again to .35.

I like the gun alot so far and may even find a Ruger M-77 tang safety in 30-06 and have it rebored and rechambered to 35WAI as I'm liking that caliber more and more every day!!!!

Hope this helps!!

Thanks a lot drdougrx. I know I am going to get something in 35 Whelen and since I have never owned a semiauto hunting rifle, I need to go ahead a get one.

Hey Tex...that's the exact reason I bought this one.  Except for a few ARs and a 10/22...all of my other rifles are bolts and single shots and I wanted something different and this one struck a cord....make sure you clean it before you shoot it inside and out.  Also...the woods' real nice..nice checkering and figure for what it is.  Any gunsmith that works on Rem 1100 triggers can work on this one to make it better.  Let us know how you end up.

Mr. Possum,
After I had a talk with my buddy who knows everything (I'm sure you have one of those) I was scared to buy a 750. JJ, the expert, calls calls that rifle a "jamomatic"!
I guess he was right again.

FWIW...I've had no issues at all with mine.  Shoots everything from spitzers to RN bullets and all different OALs.  I did however clip 2 coils off the sear spring to ease the impossible trigger....it helped a bit though I may still replace the components.....

Soooo....I'm back from the range.  After 200 rounds of various loads in the past 6mos, there hasn't been a single jam or hiccup............BUT......I have not shot any group smaller than 6" at 100yrds.   So...it is with great pain that I am going to use my 750 as a trade......later today.  Maybe a 700 bolt gun same caliber, maybe not....we'll see.

Maybe a pump action would be better but I've heard that the rifle has to be sighted in again after it is taken apart for thourough cleaning. I don't know why.
Any comments?
I may have to get a bolt action but I wolud like something different — in 35 Whelen.

I have a 750 in 30-06 and I'm surprised to hear that you aren't getting groups smaller than 6".  I've got about the same round count through mine and it's been 100% reliable also.  I've shot loads from 150gr up to 220gr through mine and haven't had a group over 2" if I let the barrel stay cool.  If I get the barrel hot and try to shoot a good group, I can forget about good accuracy.  The mag holds 4 and the group will hold together for that many, but no more.

Reliability of the 750 was never an issue.  It shot like a house afire!  Never a hang-up or a jam.  I just can't deal with huge groups.  I'm not looking for match accuracy at all...a consistant 2 or 3" group would have been sufficient.  I tried bullet weights of 200gr, 220gr, 225gr, 250gr....spitzer and RN in some.  Also, 3 different powders and two different primers. I tightened all the screws in the action, then loosened some....nothing.....I used 2 different scopes....nothing....so....off it went.

I don't blame you one bit.  There's nothing worse than a rifle that won't put up a respectable group.
