What is the best way to get paid for stuff sold in classified.
« on: February 11, 2010, 01:32:10 PM »
I'm having a bad day. I sold a barrel Jan. 27 and asked for a USPS money order. A generic MO from east cost with bank based in Alaska showed up Tuesday. Yesterday my credit union  refused payment do to improper indorcement, he didn't sign purchaser line. So it went back in the mail today and asked again for USPS money order. I'm ready to relist it and try again. I have a bad check from Kentucky for $300 on a return gone south.

seems like 12 days to get payment is way too long and united postal money order is just that and not some clone. i would feel relisting in order.

Might want to consider pay-pal.  I am not really endorsing them, but its one of the faster, more secure ways to send money and pay for items.  With modern computers, money orders can be faked and printed, personal checks are a gamble, unless you want to wait at least 30 days for them to fully clear on your bank statement.

I always request USPS or Western Union money orders.  When I'm paying, that's what I send too.  Since you specifically requested USPS I would re-list.

That's why I try to use a cashiers check to pay for items.
They can be cashed at any bank with no waiting.
They are filled in by the bank and can be verified.
They also are a lot harder to forge.

Hmmm, Western Union may be a good idea.  I have not personally used them, but the buyer gives the money to their local Western Union joint.  You are provided with a password, you go to Western Union and get cash in hand.  No way for it to bounce and once it is in hand you can do with the money what you want.

I know hundreds of people are scammed into sending money via Western Union everyday and once they tell the scammer the money is waiting it is GONE, never to be recouped.

Check out Western Union and see if their procedures will work for you.

LongTom,   I have seen fake cashiers checks, not very common, but they do show up from time to time.  They would be more reliable though.

I actually prefer a personal check to a postal money order. The ONLY place at least around here you can cash a PO MO is at the post office and our local PO never has any money. I have to accept ones from them as change if I don't have exact change most of the time as that's all they seem to ever have. If you need to cash a $200 MO you are SOL.

If you have doubts about the person you are selling to due to low or no post count and trader feedback then hold the item until it clears. I get to town so seldom picking up a PO MO is not worth my trouble, anyone who won't take my check I don't do business with. If I sell something I'll take it and ship it when I get paid but danged if I'm making a special trip to town for a MO.

the reason i like the USPS money order is I cash it when I mail the item I sold. Just have to make one trip. I sent the odd MO back today and PMed him again. Will wait a day to see if I get any response.

You learn something new every day. Until I read this thread I never knew the Post Office would cash one of their money orders. I never really thought about but it does make sense. Dale

Like GB said, if someone won't take my check then that is telling me they don't trust me and I really don't care to do business with them.

MOs are just like checks in that the bank will take them on deposit but you have to wait for them to clear.

I guess now days with the tech we have you can fake about anything.
A good feedback count still says about the most on how a person is to deal with.

I just deposit all of them in my bank account and use my debit card to pay for stuff.  Paypal will not knowingly allow you to pay for firearms related items using their system.

Don't take this personally Longtom but I don't know you from a hole in the ground.  Anyone can be anyone or anything they want to be on an internet forum.   You could claim to be a brain surgeon and church leader when in actuality you might be a unemployed pedophile posting from the public library.  It's paypal, MO, or cashier check for me from anyone I sell to via the internet.  Now if we lived close and new each other on a personal face to face relationship that would be a different story.

Not true, e-bay is chock full of listings for firearm related items that you can purchase with Paypal.  I recently bought two leather holsters and a flash suppressor in separate deals from another gun forum's classifieds and payed for all of them via Paypal.  They may have a restriction on actual firearms but as far as I can tell you can buy anything that does not require an FFL using Paypal.

I always use USPS money orders.  Your post office can cash them Just tell them to have the funds availble the next day if they dont have them. They can also run it to make sure its not fraudulant right there.  Always ship with Delivery confirmation and if your not trusting of the other person send it certified mail that ways its Mail fraud if the worst ahppens.  Return the guys bad Money order.  it could have been a bad mistake on his aprrt but relist it too.  First come first served.  Best of luck.

I use Paypal a lot and have never had a problem. I have never had them ask what the item was or was it gun related. I do a lot of selling on Ebay (not firearms) and that is the only way I list as payment for my items. I do accept mo or personal checks IF the person emails and asks for it. If you have a paypal account that is the easiest, smoothest, fastest way I have found.

Tim

I took a postal money order to my bank to cash it, and they told me the sender had 30 days to cancel the money order, and I should either deposit it, or take it to the PO for cashing. I cashed it at the Po!

Here is some info that might be helpful concerning bank checks!

Certified Check or Cashier's Check -- Which Is Better for You?

A frequently asked question in the credit world is: "What is the difference between a certified and a cashier's check?" The differences are subtle. The major differences relate to who signs the check and who is obligated to pay.

Certified Checks
A certified check is the written acceptance for a specific check (essentially an acknowledgment), by the Bank, that the Bank's Customer's signature on that check (1) is genuine and (2) there are sufficient funds in the Customer's account to honor the check when it is properly presented for payment. The check is signed by both the Customer and the Bank.

Under the UCC, both the Bank and its Customer may be liable for the payment. (UCC Sec. 3409 (d)). You would probably be required to seek remedies in a lawsuit against both the Bank and the Customer if there is a problem with the certified check.

A Bank may impose conditions upon its certification (e.g., "Void after 60 days"). If the check has been certified by mistake or obtained by fraud, the Bank may correct its error by canceling the certification and notifying you (the "payee"), if you have not already acted "in reliance" on the certified check.

Such reliance, for example, would arise if you had shipped goods because you relied on the check. One problem with a "certified" check is potential forgery. The Bank is not obligated to pay on a forged certification.

Cashier's Checks
A cashier's check is a draft drawn by a Bank on itself, which the Bank agrees to honor when properly presented for payment. The Bank, not its customer, signs the check. (UCC Sec. 3104(3) (g)). This means that the Bank is liable to pay the check. Theoretically, the Bank has set aside funds from the Customer's account to reimburse itself when the check is presented for payment by the payee. In contrast to the certified check, you could seek remedies immediately and directly against the Bank if there is a problem with the payment of the cashier's check.
start quoteCashier's checks are replacing certified checks as a favored payment method. As a practical matter, there are fewer opportunities for forgery and disputes using a cashier's check. Since there may be problems with either kind of check, if you have any misgivings at all about accepting payment via either, you should call the Bank which issued the check to ensure there are no problems or questions that stop the bank from honoring the check.end quote

If either type of check is lost, destroyed or stolen, the Bank may require a bond or another security before reissuing the check. The Bank also may refuse to honor either type of check if there are material alterations (raising or lowering the amount, changing names or dates). Otherwise the Bank must pay the check when it is presented for payment in its unaltered original form. (UCC Sec. 3412)

Under certain circumstances, for example, the lack of a proper endorsement by the payee, the Bank may refuse to honor either type of check. Although it is not obligated to do so, the Bank may decide to honor a Customer's request for a stop payment on either type of check. However, the Bank does so at its own risk and, particularly for a cashiers check, it may be liable for damages for wrongful dishonor. (UCC Sec. 3411 (b)).

Most Secure: Cashier's Check
The normal follow-up to the frequently asked question about the difference is, "Which is better?" Cashier's checks are replacing certified checks as a favored payment method.

As a practical matter, there are fewer opportunities for forgery and disputes using a cashier's check. Since there may be problems with either kind of check, if you have any misgivings at all about accepting payment via either, you should call the Bank which issued the check to ensure there are no problems or questions that stop the bank from honoring the check.

Alternatively, if your customer has the funds for a cashier's check, the funds should be equally available for a wire transfer. Rather than waiting for either type of check (for which the customer probably will be required to pay a bank fee), you may want to remove the uncertainly by asking for a wire transfer. If the cost of the wire is an issue with your customer, you can always offer to pay, or give credit against future invoices, for the relatively small fee charged for a bank wire transfer.

I can assure you that Paypal will not knowingly allow you to pay for many firearms related items using their system.  eBay is the exception because they own Paypal.  I've had Paypal cancel payment on a firearms related purchase.

No problem and no intent was taken.
I was talking more from a business situation rather than from a private party deal.
I would still feel the same way about both but I do understand the reasoning behind the latter.

I have used PAY-PAL many times to pay for not just gun related items but guns themselves from different sources, GUNBROKER, The RUGER FORUM, and PRIVATE sales.
I have never been refused or questioned about it.
Not saying that this is their rule one way or the other, just pointing out a fact from my experience.

That's BS, stop payments can't be done on postal money orders, they need to be educated, I've been cashing them at my bank for decades, I'd be changing banks if they refused to cash a USPS money order.

14.3 Cashing Money Orders
14.3.1 Validity and Value

Domestic money orders are paid regardless of the time passed since their issue. Money orders are not interest-bearing instruments; they are paid only in the exact amount imprinted up to the authorized maximum amount. USPS records serve as the basis for adjudicating claims for payment of money orders.
14.3.2 Redemption

All U.S. money orders, including military, may be cashed at any U.S. Post Office or bank. Subject to funds availability, money orders may be cashed by rural carriers. Any customer whose daily total of cashed money orders exceeds $10,000.00, irrespective of the number of Post Offices visited to cash the money orders, must also complete Form 8105-A, Funds Transaction Report (FTR), and show identification bearing the customer's photograph, name, and address.

I personally just get the USPS MO as it is convenient for me as it is bought and shipped in one transaction.  Not having to wait for a check to clear speeds up the process.  The issue with the start of the thread is probably the parties not communicating with each other.  If everyone stays in the loop and knows what's happening it would resolve alot of problems ;)  This is a great website and I can't say enough good things about it!

Thanks Graybeard ;D

I use a Wal-Mart Money order.  No problems so far and I always ask the person if they will accept one.  Lucky so far.  Here a cashiers check from a bank cost 5.00 and a Wally MO only costs .60 cents

When dealing with a private individual I've always felt most comfortable with a Postal M.O. There's just more protection there.

Personally I won't have anything to do with Paypal.

I'm with you Marv, my bank doesn't issue money orders any more, but they do offer free cashier's checks instead, so that's what I use whenever I can unless the seller wants a PMO, I always check first.
