hammer extension

I have a 44 Mag Handi rifle with the old style hammer and no transfer bar. I put a H&R hammer extension on it and am having problems.  To make it work it has to be mounted on the end of the hammer.  This is to stop it from hitting the lever that opens the barrel.  As you shoot the gun the extension walks down the hammer until it hits on the lever and then you can't cock the hammer.  On all my other handi's the hammer extension says put. I never saw this before.  But this is the first time I used one on an old hammer.  Any Help?

Trim the back side of the barrel release or mount the extension on the left side of the hammer, I trimmed the release on my 35 Whelen Impr to make it work with the old style hammer, works fine.

I have it mounted on the left side now, as I am left handed.  My barrel release rubs on my hammer now.  I don't know just where you are talking about trimming.

Trim the back edge of the barrel release where the extension hits it until it doesn't catch any more, the extension needs to be as close the tip of the spur as it can be to still allow the hammer to be cocked, there's only a little sweet spot where it will clear the release after you trim. If the hammer is the old style that doesn't use a transfer bar, the only extension that will work is the M94 type that requires the spur to be drilled and tapped as shown in the FAQs low profile hammer mods.

I mounted mine on the left.  Easy to use right or left handed.  Quick solution.

Find the sweet spot put a dimple in the hammer with a drill and lock tite the set screw that should stop it from walking
