SN range question -
« on: February 11, 2010, 09:35:20 PM »
Ok, I just read some on the FAQ thread. There is something I do not understand so I am going to ask a few questions to try to clear up my mind.

SN on mine is NL 260531

Cambering - 243 Winchester.

Ok, over on the FAQ thread, I saw a post on determining what year your gun was made. According to that, mine was made in 1997.

Ok. Thing is that it was marked in red, and said that NEF would only put 357 Mag and 44 Mag barrels on it. Why? Is the action weak, like the SB1 frame?

And is it safe to fire the high pressure rounds like the 243 on this receaver?

Please help clear my mind, and thanks in advance.

They outsourced the manufacturing of these frames during the years marked with red. I was told by H&R that they are safe to fire with the barrel that came with it but they will not fit a rifle barrel to it.

Ok, so if I buy barrels and fit them myself, it should be fine.

One more thing, what does outsourced mean? I have never heard the term before.

It means that they had another company manufacture that part instead of doing it in-house.

Ok, so I can go ahead and fit barrels to it then. Good.

If the factory says they will not fit other barrels because it would be unsafe, why would you want to take a chance and do it yourself?

Thats what I want to know. It is a 243 now. I know nothing about these guns. Its not safe to shoot I will sell it and buy a better frame.

Thats why I am asking.

or did you buy it new ?

the 243 chambering has a very high pressure.

what barrels are you wanting to put on this frame ?

Looks to me like they are saying it is ok to shoot with the barrel that came on it from the factory. The other calibers safe to use are .357 and .44mag.
I don,t know why they say this but probably because they don,t want to be liable for another factorys product.

I got it used and the SN on the barrel matches the one on the frame.

I want to get

44 Mag (On the way)
357 Mag
45/70
22 Hornet or 223
Maybe a 7.62X39 if I can find one.

I'm pretty sure they won't fit most barrels due to liability issues, Gardner used to fit any barrel that wasn't marked with an asterisk on the accessory barrel list, then Remington changed what they would fit to them after their acquisition of H&R/Marlin, now they'll only fit shotgun, 357 and 44mag barrels to them.  :-\

Yes, as long as they're fitted properly.

some factory ammo would give you a lil less than 60k cup for the 243
according to my factory load data. and various handloads are ther same.

i'm not saying to try it, but it really don't make sence if you stay around the same cup pressure.

i know its a liability thing, and i don't blame them for there statement.
