Game Feeders
« on: February 12, 2010, 04:15:47 AM »
Im thinking about a new feeder for deer and turkeys.  I have used PVC feeders with good success but the bears like to tear them up.  Id like something I can hang out of reach.  Any thing special I should know about them.  I don't need fancy, just functional.....

I make my own turkey feeders out of a 5 gallon bucket with a lid, some tin, and a few rivets.

I use On-Time's Lifetime feeders, both digital and analog.  I've also used the generic Cabela's product and some really expensive thing from Texas with a solar panel (that never works).

I have two 55 gallon drums.  One of steel and the other plastic.  55 gallons of corn (300#'s) is a lot of work and weight.  Three weeks ago sold me on the 35 gallon galvanized steel "garbage can" version.  All of mine will be converted to this in time.

Use any battery powered slinger you choose.  Cut holes in the bottom of the garbage can per the slinger instructions.  Affix the slinger.  Purchase the funnel insert from Cabelas or Sportsmen's Guide that'll fit inside the 35 gallon can.

Bend a piece of #5 steel rebar for the yoke (like a sideways bracket symbol on the typewriter keyboard { and recurve the ends back up into a circle [call this the "bracket thingy"].  For $10.00 a welding shop should make you one.  Or "triangle" shaped.

Suspend a couple of pieces of chain down to the can's handles; suspend the whole "bracket thingy" and can from a cable affixed to suspended pulleys and terminated at a boat winch (Northern Tools - cheap and easy to acquire).

SIMPLE...CHEAP...REPRODUCIBLE...

Everything depends on time and money.  I have no time and a little money, so I buy the Moultrie easy fill feeder.  This thing is $100, holds 200 lbs of corn and has a digital computer timer.  Plus it is easy to fill, just walk up to it and pour the corn in.  Yes you will spend $100 dollars but it is well worth it to be able to control the time and feed rate.

Yes they do.  They have even fixed some damage I have inflicted myself...

Thanks for the tips.  My concern would be in bear country wouldn't a bear just tip them over?  Thats why I was leaning twards something hanging out of reach.

I use the hanging ones and the tripod ones.  I put rebar down first then slide the tripod polls over it.  The hanging ones have no issue, but it sure is hard to fill or hang them without a tractor with a bucket.

Yes it is a digital age.  I have achieved technology overload.  I have no pics.  Perhaps I will take some.  Can't say for sure.
